B o o k Review

Sources and Al~ldieations of Ultraviolet Radiation. By R. Phillips, Academic Press, London, 1983.440 pp. ISBN: 0-12-553880-4. Price: £35.00. The applications of ultraviolet radiation in industrial processes are now very widespread. Chapter 1 in this book sets out to cover, albeit briefly, most of these applications, with Chapter 3 concentrating specifically on photopolymerisation. The nature of light itself is dealt with in Chapter 2 while the remainder of the book, except Chapter 15, deals, in depth, with ultraviolet sources. The last chapter, (Chapter 15), is concerned with hazards in working with ultraviolet light. The book covers ultraviolet sources in much m o r e depth than it does their applications. This is, in fact, on reflection, a reasonable balance since any attempt by the author to cover applications m o r e deeply would inevitably result in a lengthy and expensive text. Generally, I found the b o o k readable, interesting, highly presentable and very useful; and it should provide a useful balance of information, not only for workers involved in using ultraviolet light but also for those who manufacture the sources. I am sure that in the latter case this will assist in the development of better and more efficient ultraviolet techniques for use in industry and medicine. N. $. Allen
