As the s t r e a m s of the S o u t h e r n Apl)alachians are d e s t i n e d to play an i m p o r t a n t role in the industrial d e v e l o p m e n t of the S o u t h , [ d e e m a c o n s i d e r a t i o n of t h e i r c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s and salient features of sufficient interest to merit y o u r attention to-night. factories have moved to the c o t t o n fields. One of the most potent influences in tile creation of the industrial Sout h has been the perfecting of methods of t r a n s m i t t i n g electrical power long distances, and the g e n e r a t i o n of this power from tile n u m e r o u s rivers. T h e pioneer work in this line was done at A n d e r s o n and Pelzer, South Carolina, about ~895; I believe that it was in these two places that hydro-electric plants were first used to drive cotton mills. T he e x p e r i m e n t was watched with deep interest, and the results achieved were a stimulus to general development and application. To arrive at a clearer understanding of the prolnillent features of the streams under discussion, it is first necessary to consider the 1)hysiography of the regiom TheAtlantic seaboard in the Southern States presents three types ~)f formation. First, the Coastal plain; fn rth er i111an(l, the :\lluvial belt, and still further the Appalachian range of mountains, and while this chain extends froln Maine to Alalmma, aml is variously known as tile \Vhite Mountains, tile Adirondacks, tile Alleghenies, and the Blue Ridse, it is with the l'lue Ridge that we are concerned this eveninR-. To the south of the Shenandoah Vallev, in Virginia, occupying portions of Virgiuia, N or t h Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and K ent ucky. ties a tableland more than t h r e e thousand feet alcove the sea level, seventy miles wide, and three hundred miles long, known as the S o u t h e r n Appalachian plateau. All of the i m por t ant streams south of the Ohio River, in the Mississippi, (hllf, and South Atlantic drainage, trace their source to this plateau. T h e physical feature t h a t differentiates the S o u t h e r n Apl~alachians from the rest of the svstem is the wax the rivers rise. N o r t h e r n rivers, such as the James and Susquehamm, vise on the most westerly ridge and t)reak t h r o u g h the iuterveuing ranges, wending their way to the ocean. T he New River, rising on the slopes of Grandfather M~mnt~!in, in N~n'th Carolina, in the most easterly range, an(l t]owiug into the ( )hi~. is the first stream to violate this law, and establishes a prece~lent followed by all ot her S o u t h e r n rivers, hence we find all streams flowing i]orth, south, east and west rising on the slopes of the P,lue Ridge.
