This is the second edition of the book, but I had not read the first edition nor had I seen it reviewed in a Journal. Lecturing and delivering papers is in one way rather like operating. A few fortunate people can do it superbly without apparent effort, while ordinary mortals look on in envy. However, like operating, all of us can learn to speak at least competently and without sending our listeners into paroxysms of boredom. For these people Professor Calnan and Mr. Barabas’ book is a mine of information and should certainly be required reading for junior doctors, who are called upon to give case presentations or lectures. The book is divided into two parts. The first part describes the different types of presentation, starting with patient demonstrations, which are most likely to fall to the lot of house surgeons and registrars and leading up to major invited lectures and the art of chairmanship. The second part is devoted to the techniques of presentation and includes much information not only on the art of speaking but also on making the best use of the many visual aids which are now available. The message of the book can best be summed up by a remark which the authors themselves quote from Anton Chekov: “. To lecture well, that is, with profit to your listener and without boring them, requires not talent alone but experience and skill”. This book will certainly help you to do that. I. F. K. MUIR
