the connexion between elements had never been established, or even suggested, until the year 1833. At this period, now only twenty-seven years ago, Dr. Graves, in Ireland, and Dr. Basedow, in Germany, simultaneously, and unknown to one another, announced to the profession the existence of the above-named pathological condition, hitherto unobserved, or at all events unrecognised and unnamed. The symptoms which characterize this peculiar affection are met with in three organs which have to all appearance but little in common: the eye, the thyroid, and the heart, all undergo more or less extensive changes, partly functional and partly organic in all.
