NEWS Special Training for Dentists In the Senate, both Democrats and Republicans are supporting legislation to provide funds for special training of dentists and other healthcare professionals in treating AIDS patients and for telephone hotlines to help healthcare workers get AIDS information. The Democrats' S 1220 would provide $900 million for A4DS education, research, and training, including $35 million for training health professionals. The Republicans' similar bill, S 1374, declares AIDS a public health emergency and authorizes grants for improved training of dentists and other health professionals, development of curricula relating to care and treatment of AIDS victims, support of continuing education for dentists and others caring for AIDS patients, and training of dental and other faculty. The two bills are not intended to be rivals but rather are bipartisan attempts to develop a national policy to help fight AIDS.
