such as polyethylene and polypropylene. This adhesive has a very high solids content (62.5%) but is essentially non-foaming and is water-based, thus avoiding the problems of pollution and fire hazard. It is claimed to be easy to apply by a variety of methods and can often be used in existing equipment. It provides good coatibility and has good peel and tack over a wide range of coating thicknesses. Technical Bulletins on PSA 0011 are available from: CelanesePlastics

The Instrumentors Slip/Peel Tester, Model SP-101 produced by Imass (Instruments for the Materials And Structure Sciences) is designed to measure coefficients of friction between surfaces of any types of materials, in full accordance with the standard method prescribed by ASTM, and peel strength of flexible materials bonded to surfaces, in accordance with various ASTM Standards and the Pressure Sensitive Tape Council's Appendage B. For a selected test speed, the machine will integrate the force with respect to time over a given period. The average force is calculated and retained in the memory system; the peak value is also detected and stored. These values can then be recalled as a standard read-out on a precision taut-band meter, Further information can be obtained from: Imass Inc, Box 134, Accord

Speedy mixer The 'Extrumix' machine designed and manufactured by Baker Perkins Guittard at Chelles in France can, it is claimed, increase productivity of hot melt adhesives, principally in the shoemaking, woodworking and packaging industries, due to its high mixing and extruding rates. The mixing action is carried out by a pair of contra-rotating Z blades, assisted by a screw sited in the base of the trough. On completion of a batch the screw reverses and extrudes the batch through an eight hole die head into

The Compact 85 dispensinggun
The gun is charged with a 101.5mm stick of adhesive which is brought to temperature within three minutes of being switched on - the temperature is thermostatically controlled thereafter. The flow of adhesive is controlled by the amount of pressure on the trigger up to a maximum of 18g/min with immediate cut-off when the trigger is released. The thickness and configuration of the glue line can be varied by a change of nozzles. The gun will also accommodate a second stick of adhesive in reserve, to ensure a constant supply of adhesive to the nozzle.

Bubblingup An advisory service on the use of foamed hot melt adhesives has been set up by Borden (UK) Limited at their research and development laboratories in Southampton. They believe that the use of foamed adhesives has many advantages over the application of conventional adhesives. Foaming the adhesive with an inert gas, such as carbon dioxide, provides a longer open time and improved coverage and penetration with reduced adhesive consumption. After compression, the foam collapses leaving a thin glue line which sets quickly with good adhesion. Their development work and field trials were carried out using Nordson Foam Melt equipment. Users wishing to avail themselves of this service should contact:

For books Two hot melt adhesives for the book and magazine binding trade are now available from Croda. Crodamelt 36.68800 allows good lay flat properties for thick-spined paperbacks. It combines trouble-free guillotining with good open time tolerance on a variety of binding machines and can also be used for binding and lining casebound books as it allows the book block to be cold rounded. Combined with an emulsion based or hot melt primer it can be used as a two shot system to give improved binding strength on difficult papersetc. Crodamelt 36-32000 has been specially developed for the side
