New pressure compensation seal developed for transmission control units

S

IMEA is using the new Schreiner PCS Film for the reliable protection of BMW Transmission Control Units. Schreiner ProTech, working in conjunction with SIMEA GmbH, a subsidiary of Siemens, have developed a new, special-purpose pressure compensation seal (PCS) film specifically to allow cooling air flow while providing reliable protection for the sensitive electronics in the automotive transmission control units. SIMEA GmbH produces transmission control units for the German automaker BMW. To provide reliable protection for the sensitive electronics from environmental influences such as road dust, salt, oil, or moisture, they are installed in closed housings. Temperature and climatic changes lead to considerable pressure variations inside the housings, which have an adverse impact on the seals. To prevent the potential ingress of moisture the housings are equipped with vent membranes called pressure compensation seals

(PCS). Typically, these PCSs are injectionmoulded components with an integrated membrane, which must be staged separately and installed by hand in a complex, discrete process step. SIMEA was therefore seeking a more efficient solution, and to this end it awarded a respective development project to Schreiner ProTech. Instead of following the conventional approach of installing the vent membrane as an injection-moulded component assembly, Schreiner ProTech integrated the membrane in a self-adhesive, special-purpose film. This has the advantage of producing some major manufacturing benefits. The self-adhesive PCS films are staged on a roll at the respective production unit, allowing automatic dispensing and application to the component housing. A further major reduction of the required process steps was achieved by the combining the PCS into the nameplate label replacing the previous, separately installed nameplate label.

SpindleShield union reports leakage

eublin Co has introduced SpindleShield leak detection for use on sophisticated CNC machines. Coolant unions with SpindleShield employ a unique patent-pending electronic leak detection system that detects coolant problems and allows for rapid machine shutdown. Machining centres with through-coolant spindles require unions to deliver coolant at high pressure through the cutting tool at the cutting surface. For dry running cycles or machining operations with multimedia such as air, minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) or coolant, unions such as the patented Pop-Off and patent-pending AutoSense, a technology that separates the seals in the absence of coolant and allow indefinite dry run or multi-media capabilities may be used.

During each cycle from one mode to the other, a minute amount of coolant spills out, which must be collected and drained. Excessive leakage, if not detected, may leak past the spindle seals and eventually contaminate and damage the spindle bearings. SpindleShield protects the spindle and prevents replacement of spindle bearings by allowing rapid, automatic shutdown of machines. The system can be integrated into any standard system bus.
