Spiral groove sealing for small bore sizes Plants using standard pumps with small bore seal housings can now capitalise on John Crane’s zero-emission sealing technology by using the company’s new l)pe 2800E seal. Based on proprietary spiral groove technology developed by the company in 1993 for pumps with large bore seal housings, it offers the same emission containment, low service-life cost, and energy efficiency inherent in the Type 2800 family. The Type 2800E is a compact, face-to-face, dual cartridge seal. The primary rings of the seal are stationary, and the spiral grooved mating ring rotates with the pump shaft. An inert barrier gas, such as low-cost plant nitrogen, is injected into the seal chamber and the spiral grooved pattern on the mating ring pumps the gas towards the ungrooved portion of the face. This compressed gas cushion prevents the escape of the product being sealed. During operation, the seal faces do not touch, virtually eliminating seal face wear. Consequently, maintenance costs drop dramatically, extending mean time between advanced maintenance by more than lOOO%, says the company. Another significant advantage of the non-contacting feature is a reduction in heat generation. As a result of this liquid support systems for cooling are not needed. Sethco Division, Met Pro Corporation, has added three new compact stainless steel pumps to its product line. The SI Series pumps are corrosion resistant, and are engineered to provide flows up to 105 gpm and head up to 72 tdh. They are furnished with interchangeable mechanical seals which are lubricated by the liquid being pumped. All wetted parts, except the mechanical seal and cover gasket are manufactured from 316 stainless steel; the external hardware is in 18-8 stainless steel. Special features include a stainless steel adapter for extra strength, high temperature (210°F) liquid handling, and the company offers a choice of standard TEFC, UL listed or hazardous duty motors. Sethco Divison says that the pumps can be used in a wide range of chemical, laboratory and industrial process applications involving solvents, alkaline solutions, some acid solutions, Cyanide plating solu-

Seal Sentry improves seal performance Seal Sentry FM seal chambers, produced by Durco UK Ltd, are designed to enhance seal performance by modifying the flow pattern around the seal. This is said to provide improved flushing, better heat dissipation and vapour purging, eliminating air pockets and reducing seal erosion by keeping solids in suspension within the process fluid.Seal Sentry FM Series chambers are self-flushing, selfventing and self-draining. By redirecting the flow within the chamber, from a circumferential to a balanced axial pattern, a low pressure drop is produced, ensuring that solids and abrasive media remain in suspension, are merged into the returning flow path, and are flushed out of the chamber with the process fluid. In addition to better seal performance, fitting a Seal Sentry FM can result in substantial
