NEWS move relative to each other, a very small amount of PTFE is transferred to the surface of the shafi, which fills in microscopic surface irregularities and establishes an ideal running surface. This results in an efficient and durable sealing performance. The seal design allows controlled lip forces, which withstand high pressures and shaft speeds, as well as dry running capabilities. In fact this type of seal can be run at speeds of up to 17 500 rpm or 70 m/s. Contact: Blue Diamond, 1 Bishopstoke Road, Eastleigh, Hampshire,S050 6AD, UK. Split seal for agitators and mixers The Fluid Sealing division of Flowserve has extended its PSS range of mechanical seals with the introduction of PSS-A Dura seal, which is specifically designed for agitators and mixers. The PSS range encompasses a split seal design that guarantees ease of fitting and assembly on horizontal, vertical and doubleended pumps and other rotating equipment. However, the new PSS-

A is very versatile as it combines the proven reliability of the PSS design with the ability to handle increased shaft run-out of up to 1.55 mm FIM It comprises the main components of the standard PSS seal. but has a redesigned rotor, which can be manufactured from either peranfic or silicon carbide. The operating parameters of PSS-A seal include temperatures up to 121°C, pressures o f - bar and speeds of up ro 1800 rpm for shaft diameters up to 100 mm [n addition, Flowserve has introduced a cost-saving repair kit tbr the full range of PSS products. The kits can be supplied either directly to users who have the technical knowledge to undertake their own repairs or Flowserve engineers can carrv out repairs on sire or back at the manufacturer.

Super hygienic pump seal Jabsco, a business group of ITT industries, has developed
a new single-face mechanical shaft seal for its Hy-line super hygienic rotor lobe pump, which provides product safety and high temperature capabilities. The move from a flushed seal to a single seal not only eliminates the costs of flushing water, but also the danger of the waterleaking into the pump resulting in serious product contamination. The single face seal design ensures that the faces are continually under a controlled contact pressure, which provides excellent sealing at both low and high pressures. Once installed, the seal is located in the flow path of the fluid, with the sealing faces fully exposed to the liquid. This design guarantees good circulation of the product, preventing the formation of stagnant areas where bacteria can grow. It also has the addition benefit of using the product flow to keep the seal faces cool during operation. Hy-line single seals are available in three face-material combinations: carbon/stainless steel, carbon/silicon carbide and silicon carbide/silicon carbide, and can operate in fluid temperatures as high as 140°C.
John Crane Group is pleased to announce that since its launch nearly two years ago, the 5600 series universal cartridge seal has achieved more than 50 million hours of operating experience. The 5600 series, which has five basic seal configurations, was originally designed for high reliability and low maintenance. It is able to operate in temperatures up to 204°C, at pressures as high as 21 bar and at speeds up to 25.5 m/s. In addition to high reliability and low maintenance its design allows easy installation, reduces the likelihood of incorrect seal use and provides cost-savings. In addition, its interchangeable parts enables it to he customised for a number of different applications. It represented the first global cartridge seal family which met the requirements of both ANSI and DIN pump applications, as well as several local or regional pump standards. For more information, see the dynamic sealing news article "Universal cartridge brings flexibility to users" in Sealing Technology, April 1997.
