Oral tongue cancer tends to be diagnosed when the tumor is small and more easily removed, while cancer of the base of the tongue is often diagnosed at a more advanced stage. Squamous cell carcinomas of the base of the tongue may be associated with human papillomavirus, which can have an effect on prognosis and treatment.1 The prognosis for oropharyngeal carcinoma is based on human papillomavirus status, smoking history, tumor stage, and nodal stage. Microscopy shows squamous cell carcinoma infiltrating skeletal muscle.
