sector is increasing at 4-5%/y, but the similarity of available materials is resulting in the market maturing – leading to lower returns on new applications. TPO producers will thus have to focus on improved grades for auto interior uses rather than on current exterior uses. Foam, flooring and noise control are seen as the areas of greatest opportunity for soft TPOs in interior car use. Plastics News, 17 Oct 2002 (Website: http://www.plasticsnews.com)

Advances in packaging for meat, cheese and fish with DuPont’s Clysar films A new concept in packaging, already successfully launched in the US, is based on Clysar shrink films from DuPont. The film is able to compete with PVC in terms of breathability. Individual portions of meat are packaged in the new film and then in a more resistant container for shipment. On arrival, the container is removed and the meat has a vivid, fresh colour, due to the absorption of oxygen. The film allows the efficient packaging of meat, cheese and fish at a central location and shipment without losing quality. The new rigid grades of Surlyn offer a higher resistance to perforation and are suitable for the packaging of articles with sharp edges, such as meat with bones or shellfish. Coatings in 2000 and 2001. Vinyl comes third after acrylics, alkyds An account of the synthetic resins used in paints and coatings in the USA, Western Europe and Japan in 2000 includes a table from SRI Consulting that shows vinyls placed third in terms of global sales volume after acrylics and alkyds. The Western European market sells considerably more coatings tonnage than the USA but the dollar value of the European market is lower. Vinyls and acrylics tend to gain when there is a healthy market in architectural coatings. In the USA, vinyls were well ahead of alkyds in 2000, and in Europe, they came second behind alkyds. In Japan, where acrylics are strong, the

situation was very different, with vinyls having only a small share of the market and being placed sixth. In value terms, vinyls are behind the more expensive urethanes in all geographical areas. Later US figures from ChemQuest show vinyls with a smaller sales volume (508 M lbs) despite a higher figure for overall coatings sales. Acrylics figures are much higher than those in SRI’s 2000 data. The ChemQuest table suggests an annual growth rate for vinyl coatings of 4.3% a year to 2006 in the USA. One key issue in the industry is the need for new products to meet stringent environmental specifications. UV and powder resin systems are expected to make big inroads into solvent-borne coatings by 2010, although solvents will still be dominant in the emerging markets of China, India, Eastern Europe and South America. Thermosetting resins (polyesters, epoxies and amino resins) provide collectively strong competition for the other resins mentioned above. Chemical Market Reporter, 28 Oct 2002, 262 (15) FR12-14

INNOVATION AND NEW PRODUCTS Bayer’s new bonding agent Bayer Chemicals has developed SP 51021 based on toluene diisocyanate (TDI) polyisocyanurate as a solventfree bonding agent for coating polyester and polyamide synthetic fibres with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastisol coatings.

applications. Formula 851 is a multipurpose, high-viscosity, hot-melt material optimised for manual edgebanding equipment, whereas Formula 850 is a higher viscosity multi-purpose hot melt material developed for applications requiring high heat resistance. Adhesives Age, Oct 2002, 45 (10), 47

Stabilisers target wood/PVC blend for profiles Chemson Polymer-Additive in Arnoldstein, Austria, offers stabilisers for PVC/wood extrusion. The stabilisers, Naftosafe PHX 395C and 922B, have been produced from calcium/zinc or organic materials. Addition levels have been set at 8 phr. No coupling agent is needed by the vinyl part of the melt for processing compounds of up to 70% wood flour or fibre. The products also do not require equipment tweaking.
