to be related to their structure while humic acids appear to interact with Cu regardless of structure. Cd interacts only with mature, highly crosslinked humic acids. Seawater systems. Oceanologia Limnol. sin., 15(1):68-80. (In Chinese, English abstract.)

A new method for deriving linear free energy relationships is presented and used to confirm relationships between the stability constants of ion-pair/complex ions (e.g., Me-C1, Me-OH), metal-humic acids, trace metal-marine particles, and 'solution hydroxo stability' constants. Use of the method in estimating marine physico-chemical constants is discussed. Shandong Coll. of Oceanol., People's Republic of China. (mjj)

Cs (stable and radioactive) is partially stripped from seawater as it passes in series through a tandem cartridge consisting of twin beds of ion exchange resin impregnated with cupric ferrocyanide. When seawater passes through this cartridge at a constant flow-rate, collection efficiencies of each bed are the same, allowing calculation of the Cs nuclide concentration. The cartridge is made of inexpensive, readily available, PVC pipe fittings and is easily deployed under various field conditions. Thousands

The existence of long-lived microbubbles in natural waters has been postulated for many years. The surface properties of the microbubble-surfactant complex are studied using a Langmuir trough apparatus. Biologically derived glycopeptide-acyl lipid complexes form a highly insoluble monolayer at the air-water interface under appropriate salinity and pH conditions. Dept. of Appl. Math., Australian Natl. Univ., Canberra, 2600 Australia. (bwt) 84:6013 D'Arrigo, J.S., C. Saiz-Jimenez and N.S. Reimer, 1984. Geochemical properties and biochemical composition of the surfactant mixture surrounding natural microbubbles in aqueous media. J. Colloid Interface Sci., 100(1):96-105.

Hydrophobic surfactants in an aqueous extract from soil are characterized by elemental, infrared, x-ray diffraction and pyrolysis mass spectroscopic analysis. Oxygen group/metal ion interactions appear likely. The surfactants appear to be heterogeneous glycopeptide-lipopolysaccharide complexes; the glycopeptide probably is derived from chlorophyllprotein material of green algae and higher plants. Fucoxanthin, diadinoxanthin, diatoxanthin, carotene, and peridinin constitute >95% of the total carotenoid pigments in suspended particulate matter samples. Sediment trap and zooplankton fecal pellet samples contained significant amounts of carotenoid transformation products. The distribution of specific transformation products within the samples suggests that heterotrophic ester hydrolysis is a general
