Dynamic sealing gland follower at first sign of excess seepage will usually restore seal efficiency. Another advantage is that m a n y compression packings w o r k effectively on w o r n shafts or stems w h e r e o t h e r seals break d o w n or fail to align properly. Stainless s t e e l rotary seals A n e w rotary seal has b e e n designed specially for boiler feed w a t e r pumps. The T h o r o b r e d seal from C. Lee Cook has a stainless steel construction making it adaptable to a broad range of hot fluid p u m p i n g applications. Each seal is custom designed in a cartridge configuration that is pre-set at the factory and then supplied with its o w n test certification. The seal employs several design features including, individual springs producing accurate and even faceloading, wear-resistant faces made of selected carbon and silicon carbide, the use of Viton O-rings to extend resistance in a chemical e n v i r o n m e n t and seal faces that "self-position" at installation. T h o r o b r e d seals will operate in t e m p e r a t u r e s up to 180 °F and at speeds up to 10 000 fpm (approximately 6500 rpm). For t e m p e r a t u r e s above 180 °F, the seal faces should b e cooled. The typical p o w e r draw per seal is 2.5 h p for a 3.75 in diameter seal operating at 3600 r p m and 400 psi. Contact: C. Dry-running, self-adjusting packing sets look likely to change conventional thinking about using packing for rotary service by eliminating the need for flush w a t e r and greatly reducing leakage. Following extensive field testing, Garlock Inc. is introducing the DSA packing set range. T h r e e DSA designs are available to a c c o m m o d a t e various applications. Each DSA set is c o m p o s e d of a gasket spacer, braided packing rings and Graph-Lock die-formed rings. The p a t e n t e d cup and cone rings sit at

the outboard end of the packing set and expand radially to form a positive seal against the shaft and the b o x bore. The flexible graphite rings c o n d u c t heat away from the shaft with high efficiency, allowing e q u i p m e n t to run cooler and drier. A choice of braided packing rings and gasket spacers is available depending on the service conditions. A Klozure model 26 lip seal is added in the 8094-DSA to exclude solids from the stuffing box whereas the 8095-DSA incorporates a specially-designed Equalizer seal to triter out abrasive particles. The specifications for the three different packing sets are shown in the table below. 8093-DSA 500 °F (260 °C)
