The techniques included seismic refraction and electrical resistivity, amd the sites selected were e~amples of different classes of landslide. Seismic refraction surveys showed good correlation with borehole information, and the rock, boulder ar~ clay layers reported in the borehole logs ccrrespomded to the different velocity lawyers indicated. Electrical resistivity soumdi21gs were affected by the moisture eorzlltions, amd where weathered layers exist within bemds of rock they adversely affect the results obtained.

The ~ t h o d of characteristics is develope~ and brief illustrated by the propagation of unloadlrg sheckfronts. Strain rate effects in the equatioz of state are then discussed and Maivern's analys is outlined. The propagation of one-dimenslo~al plane-strain waves of large amplitt~ie, where thermody~sm~c effects become important, is discussed amd the h y ~ m ~ e theory for the propegation of large amplitude shocks is developed.
