STATOIL GETS CLOSER TO PERTAMINA The Indonesian national oil and gas company PT Pertamina (Persero) and Statoil ASA have signed a memorandum of understanding to analyse and pursue joint exploration and production business opportunities, initially in Indonesia and then potentially in other countries. Pertamina and Statoil will establish a steering committee that will be co-chaired by senior executives from both companies.
WATER & WASTEWATER SUEZ PREFERRED BIDDER ON CHINA CONTRACT Suez Environment has been named preferred bidder for a concession type contract to manage the water services for the Chinese city of Changshu, near Shanghai. Granted after an international call for tenders, the 30year full services contract represents first year turnover alone of 30 million. The contract is scheduled to start at the end of 2006. Suez Environment will be in charge of the production and distribution of drinking water (involving three plants with a total capacity of 675 000 m3/day, and 2500 km of piping networks) as well as customer service management for a population of 1.5 million. Changsu has an important

tourist trade and is one of the richest cities in China with a GNP per capita of 5500.
400MN EIB LOAN FOR BELGIAN WASTEWATER TREATMENT The European Investment Bank (EIB) is granting loans of 200 million each to Belgium’s Aquafin and SPGE (Société Publique de Gestion de l’Eau), to enable both firms to continue their medium-term (2006–2008) capital expenditure programmes. Aquafin is the company responsible for managing wastewater facilities and treatment in Flanders, and SPGE is in charge of sewage treatment in Wallonia. Both Aquafin’s and SPGE’s capital expenditure programmes involve several hundred projects – the construction of main collectors, stormwater basins, pumping stations and wastewater treatment plants, as well as work on renovating wastewater treatment plants. Aquafin currently manages 870 pumping stations, 205 wastewater treatment plants and 3928 km of wastewater collectors. SPGE manages 186 wastewater treatment plants, 1672 km of collectors and 561 wastewater pumping stations, as well as 17 000 km of sewers. This investment by SPGE is part of a 2.5 billion capital expenditure programme in Wallonia from 2000–2009.
GE TO BUILD LARGEST EDR TREATMENT PLANT GE Water & Process Technologies is to upgrade Aigües Ter-Llobregat’s (ATLL) existing water treatment facility in Abrera, Spain with GE electrodialysis reversal (EDR) technology.
GE’s water treatment technology will help ATLL to supply a trustworthy drinking water source for 20% of Barcelona’s metropolitan region (200 000 m3 per day). When completed, the facility will be the world’s largest EDR plant. Under the agreement terms, GE will operate and maintain the ATLL project for a two-year term. Construction is scheduled to begin by the end of this September. GE will operate and maintain the ATLL project, which is estimated at US$25 million, for two years after the upgrades are complete.
PULP & PAPER METSO PRINTING LINE HEADS FOR GUANGZHOU PAPER Metso Paper will supply Guangzhou Paper in Guangdong province, China with a close to 400 000 tpy printing paper production line, in an order valued at well over 100 million. Start-up is scheduled for the end of 2007. The single-supplier delivery will include a paper machine, a parent reel cart, two winders and a roll wrapping machine, together with related stock preparation equipment, wet end chemical preparation and air systems.
PÖYRY TO PROVIDE EPCM FOR BRAZILIAN MILLS Pöyry’s Forest Industry business group is to provide engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) and owner’s engineering services for Klabin’s and Aracruz’s mills in Brazil in contracts valued at about 20 million.
Klabin S/A has assigned Finland’s Pöyry to provide balance-of-plant and owner’s engineering services for the Monte Alegre mill in Telemaco Borba. The project is designed to increase the annual production of paper products from 700 000 t to 1.1 million t. It includes a new board production line, a CTMP plant, a lime kiln, a turbogenerator, a new bleaching plant, a recovery boiler and a power boiler. Pöyry will supply Aracruz Celulose S/A with the balance-of-plant and owner’s engineering services for the Aracruz mill in Barra do Riacho. The project will increase the mill’s annual capacity from 2.13 million t to 2.33 million t by increasing the production capacity of fibre line C and improving the productivity and efficiency of fibre lines A and B.
METSO SUPPLIES MDF PROJECT IN BRAZIL Metso Panelboard has been selected as a major supplier of equipment for Berneck SA’s new fiberboard plant in Araucária, Paraná, Brazil. The 6 million delivery includes equipment for debarking and chipping, silos for dosing and storing of raw material and biomass, and a fibre preparation system. Metso Panelboard will also supply a glue kitchen, drying equipment including a twostage dryer, and a sifter. The scope of Metso’s supply also includes process automation for the systems and equipment. Engineering services, such as installation and start-up supervision, will also be provided. The new MDF plant will have an annual production capacity of about 340 000 cubic metres.
