Status Report of Working Group 5.6 The Working Group held a meeting in London in April 1983 to review the various activities of the previous year and to set in motion a programme for the future. The highlights of some of the key events in this programme are given below.
Improving Computer-User Awareness; Are Robots Necessary in Shipbuilding? A two-day meeting of the International Programme Committee (IPC) is to take place in September 1984 to finalise the programme and to select, on the basis of the abstracts received, the papers to be presented at the Conference.
I C C A S 85 - Trieste, Italy
Following on the successful series of International Conferences on Computer Applications in the Automation of Ship Operation and Ship Design (ICCAS) which began in 1973 in Tokyo and continued through ICCAS 76 in Gothenburg, ICCAS 79 (Glasgow) and ICCAS 82 (Annapolis), arrangements have been made for ICCAS 85. This will be held in Trieste, Italy, from 16th to 20th September 1985, under the joint sponsorship of I F I P - I F A C and Italcantieri. The International Programme Committee held its first meeting in July 1983 and this was attended by sixteen people representing a wide range of countries and organisations. A special feature of the conference will be the move towards a closer link between the shipbuilding and shipping aspects of computer applications. The Call for Papers has now been circulated and is enjoying an acceptable response. Papers have been invited on subjects in six relevant areas: 1. Computer Aided Design; 2. Computer Aided Manufacture; 3. Computer Aids for Ship Operation; 4. Communication; 5. Information Technology; 6. The Application of Advances in Computing. In addition, Panel discussions have been arranged on: The Impact of Computers on Manpower Planning; North-Holland Computers in Industry 5 (1984) 195-196
Introduction of Research Workshops
Informal discussions at ICCAS 82 had shown that some subjects called for consideration in greater depth than was possible at a major conference. It was decided, therefore, to arrange one or two International Workshops in different centres during the period up to ICCAS 85. Each Workshop would deal with a single topic and participation would be limited to about twenty experts in that area. It had originally been envisaged that a programme of three such meeting would commence in February 1984 but certain problems arose locally and it is now hoped that they will take place in late 1984 and early 1985. The topics and intended venues are as follows: The Application of Computer Graphics to Design - Copenhagen Management Information Systems - Gothenburg The Application of Expert Systems in Ship Technology - Glasgow A S S O P O 85
In September 1983 the Norwegian Society of Automatic Control indicated that they were hoping to arrange a fourth international symposium on Automation for Safety in Shipping and Offshore Petroleum Operations in June 1985 at the Royal Garden Hotel, Trondheim, and had invited Professor Chengi Kuo to be chairman of the International Program Committee. It was agreed that I F I P would sponsor this event and a number of
people have been invited to join the International Program Committee. A First Announcement and Call for Papers was circulated early in 1984 and a meeting of the IPC will take place in late September to finalise the programme on the basis of abstracts selected.

Future Plans
There is the possibility of a conference being held in 1986 in The Netherlands on offshore automation generally. Strong interest has also been expressed by China in hosting ICCAS 88. C. Kuo University of Strathclyde Glasgow G l l X H Scotland
