This little book offers a wealth of information on epilepsy. After an introduction about the causes of epilepsy, follows a lucid exposure of the classification of seizures (the first author was chairman of the commission, that recently revised the classification) and a short chapter on the value of the EEG. The main part of the book consists of 54 case histories of different types ofepilepsy, built up in a fixed order: History, multiple choice questions, examination, investigations, course, discussion, answers and a generous reference list. The information is up to date and controversial points are not avoided. It is a thought provoking and very instructive book for neurologists and pediatricians and is highly recommended for the training of future neurologists, A. E. H. Sonnen, Breda

This second, revised and enlarged. edition of the original “Introduction to Stereotaxy (with an Atlas of the Human Brain)” by Schaltenbrand & Bailey is the textbook to the 2nd edition of the “Atlas for Stereotaxy of the Human Brain”, which was published in 1977 by Schaltenbrand & Wahren (reviewed in this journal, vol. 80,4, page 299). By now the neurosurgeon who is active in the functional stereotactics has the disposal of the complete, enlarged. edition in two magnificent volumes. In this volume an almost complete updating of neurophysiological and functional progress is presented, which is surprisingly readable for the practitioner. The book is divided in 3 divisions: Anatomical & Physiological Basis for Stereotaxy (17 chapters), Stereotactic Techniques (7 chapters) and Clinical Applications of Stereotaxy (26 chapters). The first section is very elaborate with outstanding contributions by experts in their field and includes the neuraxis from the spinal cord up to the limbic system and cerebral cortex. The second section is the least interesting with an almost exclusive exhibition of the german techniques. The section on clinical applications had headings for pain, movement disorders, behavioral disturbance and epilepsy. Studies with chronic electrical stimulation for the treatment of pain are presented and there is a nice chapter on the treatment of spasmodic torticollis. emphasizing the slowly appearing effect after the lesions (up to 6 moths after surgery). In conclusion, the complete edition (including the Atlas) is of a very high quality and is strongly recommended. D. A. Bosch, Tilburg
