APPLICATIONS Household & personal care Procter and Gamble use Airspray’s instant foaming technology in Dreft Procter and Gamble is to use Airspray’s instant foaming technology in its washing-up liquid Dreft. The direct-foaming detergent Dreft was introduced in Belgium in Oct 2005 and is currently being launched in The Netherlands. The use of Airspray’s instant foam pump in Dreft follows its application in the American washing-up liquid Dawn and the UK brand Fairy [Focus on Surfactants, Jul 2005], both P&G products. and fresh without the need for fabric softener. It contains no fibre-altering enzymes than can damage materials, is phosphate-free and its organic surfactants are biodegradable. Its low sudsing formula is also suitable for use in high-efficiency washers. According to Cot’nWash, each DROPP contains enough detergent for an entire load of heavily soiled laundry. The package is put directly in the washer with the laundry, where the packet dissolves in the wash water, releasing the superconcentrated detergent. The company says it uses as little packaging as possible, all packaging materials are recyclable, and no animal testing is used to develop products. Micro-emulsion pioneer scoops top innovation prize The recipient of the £50,000 2005 Gannochy Award for Innovation of the Royal Society of Edinburgh is John Harrison, the founder of Surface Active Solutions Ltd, the Grangemouth-based R&D company that is actively commercializing an innovative, patented specialist cleaning chemical technology, MicroEmulsions technology, on a global basis. The technology is based upon the use of surfactant chemistry with optimized molecular design and formulating techniques that have a

very significant impact in many key areas of industrial application [Focus on Surfactants, Jul 2004]. The technology has the ability to dissolve oil in water and vice versa. These advanced surfactant systems provide superior cleaning performance with the added benefit and capability to cleanly separate out organic components for recovery and recycling processes. The process also produces clean wastewater for safe disposal, eliminating the production of additional oilcontaminated hazardous wastes and emulsions.
