NEWS He continued: ‘What we, as rubber industry professionals, do every day cannot be trivialised – it cannot be dumbed down. We are scientists. We must focus on innovation, advanced technology, outreach to a next generation of employees, lean manufacturing and recognition of our industry as a foundation for industrial strength in the USA.’ ‘We must showcase our technology, our industrial know-how and our scientific reasoning each and every time we are visited by a customer who uses our products and services.’ ‘We can make an impact on our markets, profits and longevity by raising the level of education, recognition and appreciation for our industry and instilling this heightened awareness in our customers. We have to change the image and fight for recognition. Our survival depends upon it.’ Contact: Freudenberg-NOK Sealing Technologies, 47690 East Anchor Court, Plymouth, MI 48170-2455, USA. STLE launches new conference

T

he US-based Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE) is running what it describes as an all-new conference later this year. Open to industry, academic and government researchers, the first Tribology Frontiers Conference will take place on 26–28 October 2014 in Rosemont, Illinois, USA. The organisation says that the event combines its tradition of conference excellence with a dynamic new format that highlights the role tribology research can play in solving future scientific and societal challenges. STLE has also issued a ‘‘call for abstracts’’ and is inviting authors to submit, by 15 March, (on the Web-site at the address given below) details of presentations they would like to give at the event. According to STLE, authors do not need a finished paper to present at this conference.

However, it says it is partnering on this event with the Tribology Letters peer-reviewed journal, and presenters have the option of submitting their research for possible inclusion in a special issue of the publication which is dedicated to this conference.
