Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema. 1990 Roadways in a coal measures mudstone at depth around 1000m in the recently developed Lublin coalfield, Poland, have suffered severe floor heave and high support pressures. Samples have been retrieved, mineralogy established, and triaxial compression tests carried out on air dry and water saturated samples. Effects of confining pressure (to 60MPa) and water content on stress strain relations have been examined, and elastic, transitional, and brittle-plastic zones delineated.

A newly developed automated true triaxial test machine for soils is described. Details are given of the loading system, volume change measurement, and data acquisition and data processing modules. Results are presented for cyclic triaxial shear tests on Toyoura sand. 921090 Test Mast, an IBM-PC program to control and record computerised soil testings Indrawan, Z

A BASIC computer program has been developed capable of controlling and recording up to I I triaxial tests simultaneously. It allows the user to interrupt while it is running so that tasks can be altered. The program maintains two 'long files' in order to organise tests and store test data. For each test. two data files are produced: the raw data read from test and the output data file with engineering units. Details on design and application of the program are presented.

Recovery of oil from oil shales is dependent on many mechanical and physical properties. Some, including fragmentation, show strain rate dependency. Effects of strain rate on uniaxial strength, initial average Young's modulus, and Poisson's ratio were examined in the laboratory at strain rates up to values close to explosive. The rocks used included dolomite-rich Green River Formation (Utah) and Devonian Black Shale (Kentucky) whose properties bracket those of oil shales worldwide. 921087 Fully automated shearbox for residual strength measurement Rogers, C D F; Boyce, J R Proc 2nd International Conference on Foundations and Tunnels, London, 19-21 September 1989 V2, P245-251. Publ Edinburgh: Engineering Technics Press, 1989 A standard shear box has been automated for use in measuring soil shear strength after vibrational or pulsed loading or residual strength of clay soils after large strains. Complicated stress paths can be followed. Results are presented for three clay soils. Reduction of shear strength tended to increase with increase in clay fraction, liquid limit, and plasticity index, but no one parameter was found suitable to predict this reduction. 921088 Development of a squeeze test Ohr, M L; Sing, A Proc 2nd International Conference on Foundations and Tunnels, London. 19-21 September 1989 I,'2, P253-256. 921091 Anisotropic stress-strain behaviour of Bangkok sand and its application to finite element analysis Towhata, I; Hayat, T M; Jarupan, K Proc International Symposium on Computer and Physical Modelling in Geotechnical Engineering, Bangkok, 3-6 December 1986 P351-362. Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema. 1989 Triaxial compression tests were carried out on undisturbed and reconstituted samples taken with their axes parallel to and perpendicular to the plane of deposition. Stress strain anisotropy of the soil was analysed. Finite element analysis of settlement of a strip footing is presented in which effect of the measured anisotropy is included by allocating to each element a suitable modulus according to the orientations of the principal stress. This is much simpler than nonlinear analysis using an anisotropic stress strain model. 921092 Use of the pressaremeter test in weak rocks at the port of Jebel Ali Mahmoud, M; Evans, R J; Trenter, N A

The squeeze test was developed for rapid determination of average strength and deformation characteristics of wet, soft soils. The test and apparatus are described, and results compared to those for strength measurements on 36 soil samples using undrained unconsolidated compression, direct shear, or cone index tests. Squeeze test shear strengths at failure are slightly greater than those from other tests as the average strength is determined. The test is considered particularly suitable for use in off-road mobility research.

A programme of pressuremeter, plate loading and laboratory tests was conducted in the trial excavation in very weak to moderately weak breccia as part of the geotechnical investigation for the port of Jebel Ali, Dubai. During and after construction of the concrete block-work walls, measurements were made of their settlement, which permitted calculation of the deformation modulus of the underlying breccia. A comparison of results from different methods of measuring deformation modulus is presented.
