IIF, 2T, 25R. INT.J .FRACTURE,VII, N3, JUNE 1975, P495-508. It is pointed out that the Weibu11 multiaxial treatment of brittle strength contains limitations which are not present in the more familiar uniaxlal formulation. Provided these limitations are satisfied, it is possible to use tension or bending data to predict ~multiaxial bahaviour when at least one principal stress is tensile. This is illustrated for the Brazilian disc test. Predictions based on bending tests agree well with observed strength values in disc tests on two types of rocks. Auth.

3h8 BRADY,BY Tilt precursors in rock before failure. A laboratory investigation. 5F. USBM RI 8101,1975,9P. Laboratory measurements by the Bureau of Mines indicate that failure in dry rock specimens measuring approximately 13cm in length is preceded by tilt anomalies lasting a few milliseconds. The tilt behaviour is qualitatively similar to that reported to precede earthquakes. Test results suggest that the time duration of this tilt anomaly for laboratory specimens of this length is independent of rock type, in a~reemsnt with theoretical predictions and other experimental data on rock failures including earthquakes. Results of an extensive literature survey on the stress deformation properties of rock materials and discontinuities are given. 35Z SEROTA, S LgWTH~,G A new and si~lm penetration pressure meter.3F,2T. GROL~D ENGNG,V9,NI, JAN.1976, P29-31, hO. Because of increasing ind~strialisation in the vicinity of ports, a rapid and sidle method was required to evaluate properties of the soft clqys and, accordingly, a sidle pressure meter was devised w~Lich could be pushed into the ground. The test site was Mucking Flats on the Thames Estuary. The investigation was concerned mainly with measurement of sheer strength but proving tests indicated that the instrument was also capable of measuring Young' s Modulus. 353 NADEZ~DIN, AV SOROKIN, VA Influence of pre.loading on the strength of frozen soil. SOIL MECH. FODND. ENGNG, VI2, N3,1975, P185 -186. The authors tested frozen specimens of loam under axial loading conditions aud showed that t h e effect of loading is to increase the limiting lonE-term strength of the soil, although its instantaneous strength falls.
