M a n y N D T companies exhibited at Materials Testing 88 in Birmingham, UK. N D T I n t e r n a t i o n a l looks at some highlights Concrete thickness measurement up to 0.5 m was demonstrated on the U K A E A H a r w e l l stand, together with the bore polish scanner, a method of laser measurement of wear within engines developed to help in the development of automotive oils. A range of remote visual inspection equipment was launched by K M I and O l y m p u s . The OES system is an interchangeable set of fibrescopes, borescopes and accessories designed for industrial use. The fibrescopes give images up to 40% larger than previous Olympus instruments while the borescopes offer a 370 ° orbital scan. On the H o c k i n g N D T stand, the AV100SE microprocessorcontrolled eddy current unit was demonstrated. The unit has high resolution, high sensitivity and a wide frequency range. The unit is available with a hard copy printer capable of reproducing the complete screen of information. Hocking also showed the Qualcorp Airscan non-contact ultrasonic through-transmission testing method which uses air as a couplant. It is said to be suitable for detecting delaminations, disbonds and porosity in composites and bonded structures.

Magnaflux displayed new magnetic inks and penetrants including the high sensitivity Magnaglo Mg41 4HF. The ED 810 eddy current

instrument was also on the stand. It has a 40 Hz-6 MHz frequency range and a 127 mm display. T e l e d i c t o r displayed a dynamic crack detector based on the 1192 series, suitable for testing for surface defects on concentrically machined components (ball pins, tie rods etc). The system is based on the use of a small probe energized by a high frequency current. An ultrasonic thickness gauge said to have a 0.001 mm resolution, a velocity gauge and caliper for testing the nature and density of materials, and a highspeed ferrous segregator capable of sorting small machined or pressed parts were also on show. W e l l s K r a u t k r a m e r displayed the USD10 digital portable ultrasonic flaw detector for the first time in the UK. Also on display for the first time was a high-capability data recorder for the DME portable ultrasonic thickness gauge.

Applications are expected to be in both commercial and military fields including the location of

All I n s p e c t i o n N D T demonstrated a low-cost fibrescope of 6 mm diameter and 600 mm length. A T L showed its Microderm MP-900, a betabackscatter instrument said to be capable of measuring thickness on copper substrates.

Sonatest had a symphonic systems ultrasonic flaw detector on display on its stand together with Orion shear wave transducers. S t a v e l e y N D T Technologies launched its NDT 23 eddy current instrument. Further details of this and other equipment displayed at the show will be given in our next issue.

In addition the company demonstrated an ultrasonic thickness meter, a portable ultrasonic immersion scanner for industrial research, education and inspection departments, and an automatic defect recognition system using cameras and flashlights. The Welch Allyn Videoprobe 2000 was shown on the Advance Visual O p t i c s stand, together with the Efer range of borescopes and fibrescopes, including a microborescope of 0.5 mm diameter and a measuring
