Laser welding black parts GERMAN speciality chemical company Bayer has introduced a pigment that it says enables the joining of black composite components by laser beam welding. Although the pigment appears black in visible light wavelengths, it transmits a high percentage of light in the near infrared range, making laser beam welding possible. Bayer’s pigment is only used on one of the components being joined. The other component is coloured with a conventional pigment such as carbon black. The laser beam penetrates through the first component into the second, where the light is absorbed and converted into heat. The component surfaces then melt and join together. The localized increase in volume that occurs during melting ensures full surface contact between the parts. According to Bayer, laser beam welding offers many advantages in the production of composite parts that are normally too sensitive to be joined using vibration, spin and heated tool welding. As the plastic is melted over a limited area, weld lines are clean and there is no contamination. Laser beam welding is also economical, with cycle times of less than 30 seconds depending on the type of process used. It can also be used on three dimensional contours. Bayer expects the pigment to be used in electrical engineering and automotive applications, where it could be used for applications such as welding housings for electrics. Structural adhesive bonds FRP with metal to impact and peeling. According to the company, the adhesive requires minimal surface preparation and cures at room temperature in about one hour. It produces load-bearing bonds that are said to resist weathering, humidity,
A STRUCTURAL adhesive that can bond fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) with metal has been launched by Devcon of Danvers, Massachusetts, USA. Devcon Metal WelderTM is a methacrylate adhesive that is designed to provide resistance
temperatures up to 250°C and thermal shock. The adhesive is mixed and dispensed using manual or pneumatic dispensers. Devcon; 1100;
