Book Review Structure in Science and Art Wendy Pullan, Harshad Bhadeshia (Eds.); Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2000, 203 pages, ISBN 0-521-78258-9, £ 19.95 (US$ 34.95) This book originates in the 1998 Darwin College lectures, the thirteenth series of public lectures organised by Darwin College, Cambridge. It contains eight essays linked by the common theme of structure but illustrating its diversity of meaning across science, engineering, the social sciences and the arts. In each of the essays an eminent specialist in a particular discipline explores the role of structure in their ®eld: ªThe Structure of Lifeº by Simon Conway Morris, ªModels of
Structureº by Alan H. Cottrell and David G. Pettifor, ªThe Body in Space: Structures in Danceº by Shobana Jeyasingh, ªThe Structures of Landscapeº by John Dixon Hunt, ªMicroscopic Structure: Minerals and Gemstonesº by John Meurig Thomas, ªEngineering Structures: Why Do They Fail?º by John Knott, ªThe Structure of Con¯ictº by Mary Kaldor and ªThe Structure of the Imagination: Darkness Visible in the Mind's Eyeº by Marina Warner. While the concept of structure is clearly central to many of the chapters, in others the link between the material discussed and structure appears to be rather more tenuous.
