A CLIEN T recently consulted me respecting a valuable Pomeranian bitch that had missed her last two periods of restrum , and was several w eeks overdue for the present one . I tried at first , unsuccessfully, t ablets of Extract of Corpus Luteum, and Messrs. Parke, Davis & Co. then kindly offered me a sample of their tablets of orchic substan ce t o try, and after four had been given (one daily) the result desired w as obtained . I am informed that these t ablet s have not been tried before on a ·dog, and I therefore record this one instance as it may be of interest. In a leaflet sent with the t ablets it is stated that each tablet Tepr't!sents 5 grains of carefull y desiccat ed orchic subst ance (also known as orchitic or t esticular substance), .equiv.alent to 60 grains of the jre~ h glendo Harrower (" Practical Hormone Therapy," 1914, p. 338) is quot ed as follows :-" The administration of orchic substance not only provides a supply of t esticular hormone in cases of . deficient secretion, bnt it stimulat es the organ and t ends t o bring about normal function at the same time that it exerts a tonic influence on the whole glandular syst em , particularly upon those organs which are concerned in the production of energy. It enhances the hormone content of the blood." The leaflet gives it as being therapeutically indicat ed in diabet es, prostatic hypertrophy, impotence, and also that it has been reported .as being beneficial in eczema, psoriasis and certain forms of obesity.
