THE MAJOR HISTOCOMPATIBILITY COMPLEX (MHC) OF THE SNAKE, PSAMMOPHIS SIBILANS. M.A. Farag, A-H. Saad, A.F. Wahby and R. E1Ridi. Zoology Department, Faculty of Sciences, Cairo University, Cairo, Egypt. The genetic relationship between mixed leukocyte reaction (MLR) and skin allograft rejection, cell-mediated lympholysis (CML) and some somatic cell antigens has been studied in outbred adult snakes, Psarmmophis sibilans during the spring. Grafts exchanged between MLR different animals were rejected in 17-28 days, and induced the generation of specific cytotoxic effector cells as well as alloantibodies which reacted in complementdependent cytotoxicity and absorption assays with antigens present on thymocytes, splenocytes, liver, kidney and lung cells of the graft donor. In contrast, grafts exchanged between MLR identical snakes were rejected in 6070 days, and did not prime recipients for the formation of killer cells or alloantibodies. These data indicate that MLR, rapid graft rejection, CML and serologically detectable alloantigens are controlled in P. sibilans by the same genetic region. Findings on the polymorphism and biochemical characteristics of these strong histocompatibility antigens strongly support their homology with products of the MHC of amphibians, birds and mammals.
