104 Davey Laboratory, Department of Physws, The Pennsylvania State Umoerstty, Unwerstty Park, Pennsyloama 16802, USA Received 27 March 1984, accepted for pubhcatlon 16 May 1984 A study ~s presented of the lnteractton between the gases H, Ha, He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe and the surfaces KCI, NaCI, and MgO First, we calculate the coeffictent C3 of the asymptotic interaction V - - C3z -3, using the frequency dependent polartzablhty and dielectric functmns Next, we show that these results can be accurately predicted with a very simple form of these functions Tlus allows extension to other systems We then examine the correlation between C3 and the measured elgenvalue E 0 of the most strongly bound vtbratlonal state Specific attention is paid to the adsorptmn of He on NaCI, where we attempt to resolve amblgmty about the value of E 0 A brief dlscussmn of multdayer He films is provided
