Lip seal working group convenor quits Syd Croft has resigned as convenor of ISO TC131 SC7 WG4, on rotary shaft seal standards. His decision was made reluctantly, in the main because of the paucity of support that ISO working group convenors now receive from BSI, when this institution holds the WG secretariat. Syd has been involved in the development of seals standards since the mid-1980s, when he joined the BSI Committee MCE/11 ‘Fluid seals and their housings’. He took over the convenorship of this ISO working group in 1997, and was instrumental in developing the five parts of ISO 16589, Rotary shaft lip type seals incorporating thermoplastic sealing elements, and has been working to bring the five parts of ISO 6194, Rotary shaft lip type seals, in line, as the result of the five-year review. Syd’s own review of the development of
Sealing Technology March 2007
these standards appeared in Sealing Technology in November 2004. During his tenure he has shown all the necessary qualities of a fine convenor – tenacity, patience, a sense of humour and above all an excellent working knowledge of his subject, gained over his many years working at George Angus. Such is Syd’s interest and enthusiasm for the subject that he continues to be involved in the development of standards, in spite of not being employed by the seals industry for a number of years. Syd has made many friends internationally during the course of this work, and the working group will miss his leadership. It is hoped, however that he will continue to attend the meetings as the UK expert. Nick Peppiatt – Chairman, BSI committee MCE/11.
Full day for mechanical seal seminar The Mechanical Sealing Technology Seminar being organized by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers on 18 April will have a keynote presentation and 11 papers. It looks as if a very full day is ensured. The keynote by the UK’s Health and Safety Executive will be followed by technical papers in four subject areas, safety and legislation, reliability, pump seals and compressor seals. Safety and legislation subjects include Atex and IPPC.
Reliability will include the use of Root Cause Analysis, new materials and new methods of monitoring seals. Seal designs for difficult applications and split pump seals will be discussed followed by the design of gas seals for high pressure applications. Papers requested for TPE 2007 Rapra is calling for papers to be presented at the The 10th International Thermoplastic Elastomers Conference, TPE 2007, that will be held in Cologne, Germany, on 23–24 October 2007. The organizers estimate that global demand for TPEs will grow 6.2% annually until 2009 driven by direct displacement of competitive materials and by overmoulds onto rigid plastic and metal. Subjects are expected to include, TPEs with improved properties such as high melt strength, high performance ‘super’ TPVs, softer TPUs, compounding additives and techniques and processing technologies such as large part two shot moulding.
The Proceedings of TPE 2006 are also now available. Automotive and medical applications are increasing, and TPEs now comprise around 20% of the elastomeric gasket market in the US. Over-moulding is a key use of TPEs, and there are developments in materials and processing techniques to facilitate the simultaneous moulding process. The use of TPEs can enhance appearance and feel compared to conventional rubbers. Contact: Rapra Technology, Shawbury, Shrewsbury, Shropshire SY4 4NR, UK. Tel: +44 1939 250383, Fax: +44 1939 252416.
