This seminar is designed for clinicians who would like a review of current intervention strategies for stuttering in both children and adults. An overview of approaches will be presented, followed by discussion of specific effective assessment and treatment procedures with accompanying rationale and decision-making rules. Accountability issues will also be discussed, including options for measuring changes across various intervention approaches. The Successful Stuttering Management Program (SSMP) is an intensive stuttering program for adolescents and adult stutterers. It is a speech-language pathology training program of 3.5 weeks duration and has 9 stutterers, 18 clinicians, and 3 supervisors. It originated at Eastern Washington University in Cheney, WA, in 1962 and has been done 47 times in the United States and South Africa. For the past 3 summers (1998-2000) in July, the SSMP has been done both at Eastern Washington University and the University of UT in Salt Lake City in the United States.
