SUCKING ACRITICALMEASURE AND INTERVENTION FOR INFANT DEVELOPMENT Tiffany Field University of Miami School of Medicine P.O. Box 016820 (D-820) Miami, FL 33101 Lew Lipsitt stimulated a significant body of infancy research with his seminal studies on sucking. Examples from many researchers include: 1) the use of sucking as one of the primary measures of fetal and newborn perceptions, preferences and learning; 2) the confounding of other newborn measures such as heart rate by the use of sucking; 3) its use in the determination of infants’ hedonic preferences; 4) its role as a basic rest activity cycle rhythm; 5) its use as an analgesic during painful procedures and as a nonopioid system of pain reliec 6) its role in facilitating food absorption hormone release and weight gain in preterrn infants, and other very important contributions to the development of infants.
