Summary of the First IASLC China Studying Program of Lung Cancer 27–31 August, 2001, Dalian, China L. The First IASLC China Studying Program of Lung Cancer had just been successfully held from 27th to 31st August, this year in Dalian (Figs. 1 and 2), which was hosted by Dalian Medical University, presided by Professor Xiong Hai, the chairman of the Department of Thoracic Surgery at the First Hospital affiliated to Dalian Medical University. Dr Zhao Gang, the President of the First Hospital affiliated to Dalian Medical University, and Professor Zhang Zhong-xing, the Director of the Thoracic and Cardiovascular Division of China Medical Association, as well as Professor Li Hou-wen, former President of the China Medical University, attended the conference.

Sixty-nine members from 18 provinces in China and nearly 80 trainees from Dalian participated. During the conference, Professor Kato, the President of IASLC and Dr Naruke, the International wellknown Thoracic Oncologist, reported on such topics as ‘New Development in Early Detection and Localization of Lung Cancer’, ‘Prospects of the Treatment of Lung Cancer in the 21st century’, and ‘Video-Assisted Lobectomy and Lymphnectomy of Lung Cancer’, which were all highly acclaimed by the members. Chinese professors, Zhang Guo-zhen, Yin Hongnian, Song Su-ping, Liu Ji-wei, Wu Jian-lin, and Wang Feng, also gave lectures on the developments of the

Imaging and Chemotherapy, with an emphasis on the surgery-based comprehensive therapy as the most reasonable treatment of lung cancer at present. With this conference, we are confident in the bright future of the cooperation between IASLC and China,

and wish the Second IASLC China International Workshop of Lung Cancer this December in Beijing a complete success. We hope all the members of IASLC may learn the news of the two conferences in China via the Journal Lung Cancer too.
