UCTION OF The Institute of Physicsannounces that it isarranging aone-day symposium entitled I -Current

developments in the production of high vacua There will be three sessions :

~"

to take place in London on 87 April 1959 .

(a) Chemical and ionic pumping in kinetic vacmuon systems.

(b) Problems in the production of high vacua in large equipment. (c) Analysis of residual gases in kinetic vacuum systems.

Each of thw first two eeions will be opened by invited speakers, and offers ny short cootri-

butiwn m, especially for the third session, will be considered by the Organizing Committee if outlines are submitted by 05 January 1959 . The symposium ^s intended mainly for persons working with high vacua . Abstracts (but not

preprints) will be circulated before the symposium, the proceedings of which will not be published in full .

All communications regarding the symposium should be sent to the Secretary, The Institute

of Physics, 47 Belgrawe Square, London, S.W.0 .

1959 CERN BUDGET APPROVE M As Twelhh Session. held in Geneva on December 3rd, 1958, the Council of CERN approv-

ed contributions from the twelve Member States totalling 55 000 000 Swiss francs for 8959. This compares with a budget of 56 0}0 000 Swims francs for 8950,

Following m discussion of the reports on 0958 activities submitted by Professor C. J . Bakker,

Director-General of CERN . and by the Divisional Directors, the Council unanimously expressed its approval of the remarkable progress made during 895@ in the construction of CERN's two big particle accelerators and of CERN's other buildings and ancillary facilities.

The first machine . a 600 MeV synchmm-cyclotron, came into operation on August Ist, 8057.
