Reviewer’s Expert Opinion Description: This first edition of a nearly comprehensive textbook of pediatric emergency medicine focuses primarily on diagnosis and treatment. Purpose: The goal is to provide a user-friendly text to facilitate diagnosis and treatment of pediatric emergencies at the patient’s bedside. This book is meant to supplement, not replace, the authors’ Textbookof Pediatric EmergencyMedicine, a worthwhile objective because many large textbooks are too unwieldy to be carried to the bedside. This book indeed is portable and easy to read. Audience: The authors recommend this book primarily to medical students and emergency medicine residents, as well as practitioners. Emergency medicine residents will appreciate this book’s focus on diagnosis and treatment. Medical students may yearn for more information on epidemiology and pathophysiology. Practitioners should rely on the definitive textbook. The authors are well-regarded authorities on pediatric emer-

gency medicine because they are emergency department directors at two of the nation’s top children’s hospitals and authors of the aforementioned textbook. Features: This book provides several useful tables and illustrations, especially in the procedure section. It contains many chapters titled by symptom, which aids in making a quick diagnosis. The index is detailed, easy to use, and even notes if a citation refers to text, table, or figure. Assessment: This is a useful, easy-to-usebook. Although the entire contents and more are available in the complete Textbook, this book is more portable and therefore more likely be chosen by residents and students who can read it at work, as well as at home. The focus on diagnosis and treatment facilitates information gathering. The authors could improve the section on cardiac emergencies to include more detail on neonatal emergencies and brief pathophysiology.
