yntheses, Structures and S Non-heme Iron ~itr~sy Liiuan Li. California Bate University, Long Beach, United States Eric B Lundberg, California State University, Long Beach, United States Ximeng Wang California State University, Long Beach, United States Nitric oxide (Rio) has become a fascinating entity in biological chemistry over the ast few years. Bhis ~~Q~e~nIeis killing invading rni~~o~r~a~isr~~s and a number responsible for controlling blood pressure, preventing platelet agg ofother important bodily functions. These recent discoveries have a great interest in the development oft~~~sitio~ ompiexes that ha~e been i~en~~~e~~ as ~ro~~c~s metal somplexes containing NO. Among them are non-heme iron after biosynthetic evolution ofnitric oxide. Synthesizing non-heme iron nitrosyl with ligands that mimic b~ologieally active complexes provildas evidence that compounds of analogous structures may be involved in the physiological processesof NO storage and libe~~~~o~, ~~rre~tl~, few non-heme iron nitrosyi have been isolated and little is known about their structure and electronic ~~o~e~~~s, Our research aims at producing and examining the structure of particular non-heme iron nitrosyl complexes that mimic b~~~~2~~al~y active compounds by using ligands similar to the amino acid histidine. Comniex ofFe(NO),(MeIm),, where MeIm is 1-methylimidazole, was sy~thesi~~~and single crystals ‘wereisolated from diethyl ether. X-ray crystallographic analysis of Fe(NO),(MeIm), reveals that the coordination about Fe is tetrahedral in which the nitrosyls are linear in geometry. This compound is the first isolated g = 2.03 family of ir5n ~in~~r~sy~ complexes coordinated to biological ligands. However, Mass Spectrometry studies of the reactions between Fe(NO),(GO), and a series ~fs~bstit~te~ ~~~ida~~les and ben~imid~zoles show the formation of clusters in the solution. Is fully modifying reaction ~~~~it~ons~we recently isolated a novel cyclic ring compound, [Fe(NO),(Im)],. The EPR, studies ofthese complexes will be discussed.
