Ru (II) complexeswith various bidentate aromatic amines (e.g. ophenanthroline) have been shownto interact strongly with DNA [I]. Various ligandsderived from 2,2'-bipyridine were synthetized in order to obtain binuclear complexes.

The synthesis of these ligands and of the corresponding ruthenium (II) complexes are described. The complexeswere purified by Sephadex LH20 column chromatography and were characterized by PDMS, NMR spec~'oscopy and UV-visible speclroscopy. Studies on interactions with DN by elec~ophoresis experiments using plasmtd pBR 322 DNA and other methods will be reported. [I] A.M. Pyle,J.P. Rehmann,R. Meshoyrer, C.V. Kumar, N.J. Turro and J.K.
