INITIATING MECHANISM IN THE THERMAL D E G R A D A T I O N OF HIGH POLYMERS

A I~I~TttOD has been proposed for determining the mechanism of active centre generation in the thermal degradation of polymers, based on determining the dependence of the effective rate constant upon the initial mean degree of polymerization. The validity of the method has been confirmed b y d a t a on the thermal degradation of polyformaldehyde. POLYMERIZATION OF ~-CHLOROCYCLOHEXENE

TIt~, thermal a n d catalytic polymerization of ~-chlorocyclohoxene has been investigated. I t has been found t h a t on thermal initiation the reaction obeys the monomolecular law, the activation energy being E~-52 kcal/mole. A striking feature in the polymerization of ~-chlorocyclohexene n o t observed heretofore is t h a t chain growth is accompanied b y dehydrochlorination. This complex reaction of "polymerizational condensation" leads to the formation of a " p a c k e t " structure in the polymer chain. *SYNTHESIS AND POLYMERIZATION (COPOLYMERIZATION) OF FLUORINATED STYRENES---I. TRANSITION from the amorphous to the crystalline state has been found to take place, under mereuration conditions, with polymers either possessing a chain structure or capable o f undergoing change into a chain or nearly chain structure.
