A series of 16 protic ionic liquids (PILs) have been synthesized and characterized. The studied PILs show biodegradability levels between 41-64% (BOD5 method). PILs possessing the cyclopentane carboxylate anion are not toxic to A.sallina. Tg and viscosity data provide evidence that the studied PILs exhibit fragile behaviour.
