Composites, BROOKHOUSE UK, has installed a Vector 2500 ply cutting machine from Lectra Systems in order to speed up production of composite aerospace components. The system is being used to help with the development of multi-ply carbon prepreg laminates. The company previously developed ply templates manually, which it says was very time consuming and often wasted material.
Using the new system, the company can now develop plies directly from computer aided design (CAD) systems rather than by using physical models and mould tools, which Brookhouse says can save up to 24 hours in a production schedule. The machine software can plan cutting operations so that individual prepreg templates can be nested within rolls of material to allow complete sets of components to be manufactured and save material costs. Fabric is held firmly in place by suction, which is applied evenly across the whole surface of the cutting table. According to Lectra, the combined effects of the suction and the blade trajectory ensure the accuracy of the piece being

cut, regardless of material type. A user-friendly graphic interface allows visual monitoring and real-time tracking of each cutting operation. The system can be used for cutting a wide rage of plies and including honeymaterials combs, and its software package is designed to cope with complex shapes and imported data from various CAD systems. Based in Lancashire, Brookhouse specializes in manufacturing and assembling composite components for the aerospace industry. The company has previously installed equipment for producing large and complex composite parts as well as for smaller objects such as
FRENCH Oil Mill Machinery Co, USA, has developed a compact 30 tonne compression moulding system that is designed to be moved quickly and easily with minimum expense and downtime. The system offers a press, power unit and controls in a compact, modular unit. Clamping forces can be adjusted from O-30 tonnes and the unit has a pressing surface measuring 4.6 m x 4.6 m. The press uses electrically heated platens, can be cooled with water, and has built in T-slots for mounting tooling.
