processingnews Core moulding eliminates hand finishing A NEW m o u l d i n g t e c h n i q u e d e v e l o p e d by MCP Equipment, Staffordshire, UK, is said to produce high gloss surfaces on fusible alloy cores w i t h o u t h a n d finishing. Fusible cores are used to form one-piece c o m p o s i t e comp o n e n t s and s o m e t i m e s need an exceptionally s m o o t h surface to confer particular aerod y n a m i c or flow characteristics w h e n the core is melted out.
MCP's m o u l d i n g t e c h n i q u e i n v o l v e s p a i n t i n g a master m o d e l of the core with a cellulose primer, w h i c h is lightly rubbed d o w n w h e n dry. The master is t h e n used to m a k e a split m o u l d in silicone rubber, The slightly r o u g h e n e d surface of t h e master transfers to the silicone rubber and provides a key for an anti-slip agent that is rubbed into t h e m o u l d surface,
W h e n t h e alloy is m e l t e d and cast into the m o u l d , the anti-slip agent controls metal m i g r a t i o n and solidification at the m o u l d surfaces to p r o d u c e a s m o o t h finish. MCP says that it has successfully cast cores weighing up to 3.S kg in 96°C m e l t - p o i n t b i s m u t h alloy. MCP Equipment; tel: +441785-815651.

System scans contact stress SENSOR PRODUCTS Inc (SPI), East Hanover, New .Jersey, USA, has developed a pressure analysis system that calculates the distribution and actual magnitude of pressure between any two contacting or impacting surfaces. Topaq uses a specially calibrated densitimetric scanner with W i n d o w s software to read and interpret markings on stress indicating fihns, w h i c h change colour w h e n pressure is applied. From the readings, the system produces high resolution, colour calibrated images and statistical reports. Topaq is designed for any a p p l i c a t i o n where two objects are pressed or f o r m e d t o g e t h e r i n c l u d i n g the analysis of pressure u n i f o r m i t y d u r i n g c o m paction in c o m p o s i t e m a n u facturing, m a c h i n e calibration in pressing and forming e q u i p m e n t , and t h e fabrication of plastic iniection moulds. It can also be used for a n a l y z i n g sealoffs, pattern and pressure levels in moulds, v e n t i n g and matching of inserts, and m e a s u r i n g h o r n interface pressure d u r i n g ultrasonic welding. According to SPI, t h e system can produce histograms of pressure levels, e n l a r g e m e n t and reduction capabilities, p s e u d o - c o l o u r and three dime n s i o n a l v i e w i n g modes, and smoothing, filtering and t h r e h o l d i n g . Surface c o n t a c t areas d o w n to 3 Dm can be analyzed, and images and statistics can be saved, printed and e x p o r t e d for use in o t h e r software packages.
