Treatment technicians at Crosman Corporation, recently c e l e b r a t e d a first-year anniversary. T h e i r E2P (Versa-Matic's two-inch P o l y p r o p y l e n e p u m p w i t h t h e Elima-Matic ® antistalling, non-icing, lubricationfrec air valve) and XL ThermoMatic TM Versa-Dome ~"~ diap h r a g m had b e e n in service for exactly one year - six m o n t h s longer than Ken had e x p e c t e d and nine m o n t h s longer than the best p e r f o r m a n c e of the c o m p e t itive p u m p and diaphragm. Crosman Corporation, the w o r l d ' s leading air gun manufacturer and distributor, was o n e of Versa-Matic's test sites for the Versa-Dome version of the XL Thermo-Matic diaphragm. Made from a c o m p o s i t e of materials, t h e XL T h e r m o - M a t i c , w h i c h Versa-Matic invented and introd u c e d in 1988, resists abrasives and chemicals, and e n d u r e s as long or longer than rubber diaphragms. Eden Associates is Versa-Matic's d i s t r i b u t o r in N e w York's Buffalo, R o c h e s t e r a n d S y r a c u s e areas. D e n n i s k n e w that t h e r e w e r e p r o b l e m s w i t h the t w o - i n c h plastic p u m p a n d d i a p h r a g m u s e d in a transfer application for p u m p i n g w a s t e w a t e r from four large h o l d i n g tanks into a pha d j u s t m e n t tank. W a s t c w a t e r g e n e r a t e d d u r i n g the air g u n production process contains m e t a l c o n t a m i n a n t s that m u s t bc chemically treated and r e m o v e d b e f o r e disposal. The pump that transfers Crosman's wastewater is c o m p u t e r controlled; it runs 24h o u r s a day, cycling o n and off, d e p e n d i n g o n t h e w a t e r level o f t h e tank a n d p H b a l a n c e o f t h e w a t e r . T h e i n t e r m i t t e n c y o f the transfer process and varying soil loading of t h e w a s t e w a t e r caused the competitive pump to stall frequently, often b e t w e e n 10 a n d 15 times a day, d e s p i t e the fact that t h e p u m p w a s run w i t h 30 lb o f air.
W h e n t h e p u m p stalled, often t h e storage tanks w o u l d b a c k up. In a d d i t i o n , t h e c o m p e t i t i v e p u m p a n d diap h r a g m w o r e quickly.To r e d u c e the unexpected downtime, a costly, t i m e - c o n s u m i n g preventive m a i n t e n a n c e s c h e d u l e w a s instituted, r e b u i l d i n g t h e p u m p every two months. W i t h t h e t w o - i n c h ElimaMatic p l a s t i c p u m p a n d XL Thermo-Matic Dome diaphragm, maintenance costs have b e e n significantly r e d u c e d and d o w n t i m e virtually elimin a t e d in t h e w a s t e w a t e r treatment area of Crosman. O p e r a t i n g costs are also less because the Elima-Matic requires less air. Based o n this e x p e r i e n c e , Elima-Matic air valves and o t h e r replacement parts and diaphragms have now been i n t r o d u c e d into o t h e r areas o f Crosman. The Customer Engineering E q u i p m e n t division o f Allied Colloids, o n e of t h e w o r l d ' s leading manufacturer of synthetic flocculants, is incorponlting specially d e s i g n e d cast iron low f l o w progressing cavity p u m p s from M o n o Pumps, into its flocculant p r e p a r a t i o n and dosing rigs installed primarily in waste w a t e r t r e a t m e n t facilities globally. Scott B r o w n thanked more than 20() e m p l o y e e s o f Smith & Loveless for t h e i r r e m a r k a b l e effort to expeditiously build two w a s t e w a t e r t r e a t m e n t plants. T h e c e r e m o n y , w h i c h coinc i d e d w i t h t h e s h i p p i n g date of t h e t r e a t m e n t p l a n t s from t h e Lenexa, Kan, h e a d q u a r t e r s of Smith & Loveless, was certainly
