Violations cause pollution control market increase
BPMA Pumps in Industry Awards 2004
The world market for refinery air pollution control equipment will grow from $465 million in 2003 to $807 million in 2008. This is the conclusion reached in the an on-line report, Refinery Air Pollution Control Markets, by the McIlvaine Company.
The BPMA has announced the date and venue for next year's Pumps in Industry Awards as Thursday 25th March 2004 at The Britannia Royal Court Hotel, Coventry, UK. The call for nominations for the 2004 award categories will follow very shortly. These will be for:
The three main driver are: the retrofit market caused by past violations of the U.S. Clean Air Act, the decreasing sulphur content requirements in fuel and expanding worldwide refining capacity. The retrofit market will largely be in the U.S. and in Europe, whereas the new capacity opportunities will be in Asia and the Middle East. A significant new opportunity has
risen in Iraq as a result of the recent change in government. A number of refineries in the U.S. expanded or modified their operations without notifying EPA under a provision called New Source Review. Subsequent litigation with some 40% of the refineries resulted in consent decrees stipulating precisely the installation of certain equipment on specific dates. Across the Atlantic, the European Union Directive 96/61 requires that oil refineries must adopt Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) in the 2003-2007 timeframe.
Parker in contract win Parker Instrumentation's high integrity instrumentation manifolds valves and tube fittings have been selected for Spanish Egyptian Gas' (Segas) liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in the port of Damietta, Egypt. The instrumentation components will be used to build the measurement and control systems on the largest singletrain LNG liquefaction plant in the world, which will have a capacity approaching 5 mtpa (million tons/annum) when it is
completed in late 2004. The facility will be used to export gas to Spanish power generators. Segas' liquefaction and storage facility, Egypt's first LNG plant, will process and export natural gas coming predominantly from the off-shore fields in the Nile delta. In doing so, it will be supporting the Egyptian government's strategy of maximising the value of the country's gas resources, while also ensuring the domestic market is fully satisfied.
Tax relief for UK water technology investment UK businesses could get 100% tax relief by investing in products that encourage sustainable water use. A new website launched under the UK's Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) Scheme enables manufacturers and suppliers of water technologies to apply on-line to have their products considered for inclusion on the Water Technology List. Businesses then buying a product from the

List will be able to claim a tax relief. The new website provides details of the criteria for the five qualifying technologies that were announced in this year's Budget. These are: meters and monitoring equipment, flow controllers, leakage detection equipment, efficient toilets and efficient taps. The website can be found via www.ecawater.gov.uk

Last year’s event has attracted considerable note, not least because that out of the 200 guests in attendance, more than 160 were still up at 2 o'clock in the morning for the 'Pump Industry Survivors Breakfast'. Rumours that a 'Pump Industry Survivors lunch' is being planned for next year have so far proved to be unfounded.
Performance award A pump repair facility maintained by Flowserve Corporation and located on the Eastman Chemical site in Kingsport, Tennessee was presented a 'Supplier Excellence' award through the 'Eastman Supplier Excellence Program.' The award was presented on June 2, 2003 in recognition of the facility's 'Outstanding Quality Performance as a Supplier' during 2002. In a field of more than 3,200 suppliers, Flowserve was acknowledged as a leading supplier for one of the largest chemical processing complexes in the US.
The Flowserve facility began operations at the Eastman Chemical site in March 1997 as a Durco ANSI pump repair facility. Since that time, the facility has expanded its role and is now repairing a variety of rotating equipment including multistage vertical pumps, gear pumps, diaphragm pumps, vacuum pumps, gearboxes, and blowers. Flowserve is a major supplier of industrial flow management services and currently employs nine full-time employees at its Eastman service and repair facility.
