By working together Wealone.,canachieve greater benefits than one company Fugitive emissions cost industry £ million in product loss, repair costs and reduced plant reliability and efficiency. BP Chemicals has already devised a plan w~c~ will almost halve fugitive emissions from valves on its own plants and looks set to save more than £1 million per year in production costs. potential savings result from an innovative parmership between BP Chemicals and 10 suppliers of industrial packing which seals the joint at the valve stern (see Sealing Technolosy number 2). BP Chemicals is now using improved packings on all new valves at its sites and will fit new packings to existing 'leaky valves' over a four year period.

The network will be chaired for its first year by Barrie Kirkman, BP Chemicals Engineering and Technology Manager for Vessels and Piping BP Chemicals organised the forum after receiving more than 150 enquiries about its work from valve users in the oil gas, chemical and other industries worldwide, including companies from China, Hong Kong, India and Singapore. Bill Tallis, General Manager of BP Chemicals Technology and Engineering Department said, "We have described how our valve packing tests have shown us how to improve the performance of valve packings on our plants.
