MATERIALS Merck adds new multicolour effect pigment German company Merck has introduced Colorstream® T10-04 Lapis Sunlight as the latest addition to its range of multicolour effect pigments. The company says the pigment’s colour travel extends from gold to silver green and deep blue. The new pigment joins the four other previously introduced Colorstream effect pigments: Tropic Sunrise, launched at K2004 [ADPO, January 2005], Autumn Mystery, Viola Fantasy and Artic Fire. According to Merck, Colorstream Lapis Sunlight is based on synthetically produced transparent silicon dioxide platelets that are coated with titanium dioxide. The perception of the colour changes depending on the angle of observation. The company says that the colour changes are so intense that they can be easily perceived even under unfavourable light conditions. Merck says that the new Colorstream pigment is suitable for a number of colorant applications, including thermoplastics and coatings. It is said to offer a number of styling possibilities due to its high transparency – for example, in combination with other organic or inorganic colorants, as well as other effect pigments. Techmer PM launches new anti-slip additive US company Techmer PM has introduced a new anti-slip additive formulated specifically for extruded-film bags that get shipped on pallets. According to Mark Jordan, Techmer PM’s VP of sales and marketing, PM13025 reduces the chance of bags sliding around on the pallet by increasing the surface friction of extruded polyethylene films. The new modifier is non-migratory, meaning that the unique particles it contains stay

permanently at the film’s surface and do not affect any other properties of the film, the company says. As a result, Techmer PM says that this anti-slip modifier can be used in films for extremely demanding applications such as fertilizer bags. Other popular end-product uses will include bags for salt, seeds and mulch. PM13025 can also be used in the external layer of co-extruded films. The company’s VP of technology Ebrahim Mor says that the proprietary anti-slip technology used in the new additive is extremely versatile. “We can tailor its effectiveness to suit the requirements of practically any application.” If the normal properties of PM13025 aren’t exactly right, the size and/or amount of the anti-slip particles can be changed to achieve whatever the customer needs, Mor explains. PM13025 comes in polyethylene pellets. Techmer PM recommends processing at temperatures no higher than 287°C (550°F). In other company news, Techmer PM has recently created a new Fiber & Nonwovens Division dedicated to supplying colour and additive concentrates for applications in the automotive, floor-covering, industrial, technical and nonwoven fibres markets. Dow Corning releases new silane coupling agent Dow Corning has added a new silane coupling agent that is claimed to increase the initial and wet strengths of glass-filled polyester and other resin systems. According to the company, Dow Corning Z-6172 Silane, a vinyl-tris(2-methoxyethoxy) silane coupling agent, also provides improved dispersion of mineral fillers in EPDM rubbers and thermoplastic resins, and can optimize electrical and physical properties of mineral-filled elastomers and plastics. Applications include treatment of aluminium trihyrdrate (ATH), magnesium dihydrate (MDH) and clays used in wire and cable.
