Vacuum News When running the actual machine, the programmer unit is no longer required. It can, however, be plugged-in to display the actual state of any channel while the machine is running. Empirical timing changes are also easily carried out at this stage. An important feature is that the open/close angles can be set to the actual angle of the machine shaft. This allows the engineer to inch the machine to the exact position where a switching is required and set the open or close angle exactly to that position. Once the timing has been accepted, the operator can again write the approved program to the memory module. When this is plugged into the cam box the ZED-Cam will carry out its machine control program indefinitely with complete accuracy. The program is not lost when the power to the machine is turned off. Should timing adjustments be required the memory module is plugged into the programmer again, its contents can be displayed, verified and modified within seconds. ZED Instruments Ltd. vibration

analyser

The ‘800 Series’ of digital vibration analysers from Shape Instruments of Wokingham is a new range of portable instrumentation for measuring and displaying acceleration, velocity and displacement directly in engineering units.

These compact battery powered analysers are small enough to take anywhere, yet provide accurate and easy to read digital display data. The ‘800 Series’ instruments are housed in rugged, lightweight polypropofane cases and supplied with a standard 3 Hz to 15 kHz, plus or minus 0.5 dB accelerometer, 10 ft of low noise cable, a wideband plug-in module and two alkaline batteries. Analog broadband acceleration and displacement outputs are provided to interface directly with spectrum analysers, chart recorders, oscillographs, tape recorders and other readout devices, The ‘800 Series’ is compatible with accelerometers operating from -66F (-54C) to 75o’F (4OOC) and ideal for monitoring bearing wear, balance, misalignment and identifying causes of excessive vibration. There are several models available within the ‘800 Series’ including the ‘821’ which is particularly suited to general purpose vibration test and measurement applications; the ‘850’ which presents displacement on three LED digital panels simultaneously and latches a relay when a ‘preset displacement threshold is exceeded; and the ‘860’ which has been specifically designed for use as a low frequency conditioning module. Commercial news Techmeta

welders

One of the most sophisticated designs of electron beam welding systems is now available and fully backed up by service in this country, as Techmeta SA, of Annecy, France, have appointed Torvac as exclusive agents for the British Isles for their electron beam welders.

Torvac are very pleased to offer Techmeta products, either complete Techmeta systems, or with the back bombardment gun mounted on work chambers and handling gear designed and built by Torvac.

The Techmeta gun uses back bombardment, thus having very long filament life and excellent stability. It is compact and powerful, and well engineered. Different versions use accelerating voltages from 60 kV up to 80 kV and powers up to 20 kW. Techmeta build complete EB welding systems, with chambar from 300 mm cube up to 10 m long cylindrical. They also specialize in continuous bi and tri-metal strip welders, air to vacuum to air, using twin EB guns.

As announced at the Furnace Exhibition, Torvac are now agents for Vacuum Furnace Systems Corporation (VFS), for their advanced range of industrial vacuum furnaces, in the British Isles and many other areas outside the Americas. Like Techmeta, VFS was founded by a person very experienced in the vacuum industry, Bill Jones, who was one of the original founders of Abar and for many years responsible for Abar furnace designs.

One particularly neat Techmeta machine is the Belfort, designed for high production for example of automotive components. It has a two-station rotary indexing table, the component with its fixture being elevated into the work chamber. This machine is capable of fast cycling, and operates for 40 h or more between filament changes, a particularly important feature for mass production applications.

In only four years Bill Jones has built up VFSsales to over s4m. with a customer list including famous names such as Westinghouse, GE (USA), Pratt & Whitney and Vachyd Corporation. He continues to produce some of the best new ideas in vacuum furnace design.

Techmeta was formed about 12 yr ago by Dr Sommeria, one of the pioneers of electron beam welding in France. Dr Sommeria started work on EB systems with the French Atomic Energy Authority (CEA), spent many years with Alcatel and then established his own business doing subcontract E8 welding and also building equipment for sale. Because of the sophistication of the Techmeta eouipment it is somewhat more expensive than Torvac models, but we believe it has a place in specialized applications. In addition the bi-metal and trimetal strip welding systems are very attractive, well engineered and capable of high throughputs. Several are working in Russia.

VFS furnaces include flat strip molybdenum elements mounted in a circular hot zone within a cylindrical vacuum chamber. These elements are more robust than some other designs, and use a particularly ingenious patented mount that provides excellent protection against metallization of insulators and thus increases the trouble-free life of the system. Other important features include dual roots blowers and very effective and powerful gas quench systems, the most efficient on the market. British pumps and instruments can be fitted; in due course Torvac plan to build the VFS designs in this country. The VFS range of eight horizontal front loaders runs from a 26 in. dia (660 mm) heating element configuration up to the 66 in. dia (1676 mm) x 96 in. deep (2.438 m) HL66 with 2.2 tonne load capacity. 443
