Technical and industrial development New high vacuum evaporator NRC-Europe, a subsidiary of Norton Company, Haute Savoie, France, has introduced the N R C 3110, a new high speed vacuum system for the production of thin films by vacuum evaporation. This system was designed to simplify installation and to facilitate adaptation of automatic process controls. The basic model provides a separate controlled enclosure for the electrical controls, separating them from the main vacuum system package. Controls for air, nitrogen water, plant vacuum and dry air flow circuits are also included. The system comprises a high-speed vacuum pumping module with a 2400 l/sec N R C VHS 6 diffusion pump; a 30 m~/h mechanical pump; a 660 mm ~ base plate; a 4 6 0 mm o The NRC 230 molecular sieve foreline trap

Electron spectrometer for chemical analysis GEC-AEI (Electronics) Ltd have recently introduced the Eiectrospec ESI00, a high and low electron spectrometer for chemical analysis. The technique allows the detection and correlation of electron energy shift data with valency and oxidation states of any given atom in any given molecule or surface. Applications include inorganic, organic and surface chemistry; biochemistry; metallurgy; catalysis; biology; geology or mineralogy; and glass technology. × 760 mm Pyrex bell j a r with guard ; automatically-operated valves; a motorised hoist; and mechanical refrigeration system. The control system includes the pump and refrigeration controls, automatic valve controls, and the vacuum gauging and hoist control. Baseplate feedthroughs, evaporation power supplies, deposition control equipment and internal fixturing are also available. A further development of NRC-Europe is the N R C 230 molecular sieve foreline trap for use in the roughing line of a vacuum system to prevent back-migration of oil from mechanical roughing pumps. The removal of contaminants significantly increases the cleanliness of the system and improves the starting pumpdown performance. The N R C 230 offers 100 per cent filtration, all contaminants having contact with the molecular sieve material. A built-in thermocouple gauge port with a model 531 thermocouple gauge is provided which permits accurate foreline pressure measurement and indicates when regeneration is required. A thermostatically-controlled bakeout mantle can be supplied for regeneration of the trap. NRC-Europe, UK Circle number 50 on Reader Enquiry Service

New electron beam gun Sloan Instruments Corp, Santa Barbara, California, have introduced the MXV-6 electron beam gun, a 6 kW heavy duty gun with a large capacity water-cooled circular hearth. The evaporant exit angle is 90 ° and the 37 cc hearth is capable of holding ¼ ib of aluminium. Electromagnetic control of the 180 ° bent beam permits position and sweep within the hearth. Using the SIoan electron beam power supply, the gun is capable of evaporating 8,000 A/rain of aluminium 10 inches from the hearth. The gun measures 5 × 3# x 4 inches and is compact for installation within the average unit. It is also designed for heavy production use application. 389

Model 1218 Coldwall vacuum furnace, a completely self-contained, fully automatic programmed furnace. The 1218 Coldwall furnace has a work zone 12 inch d i a m e t e r . 18 inch depth, and comprehensive safety interlocks are provided to guard against maloperation. The machine is also protected against vacuum and water failure and against overheating. The pumpdown is governed by pressure and the valve sequence is automatic. When the correct operating vacuum is reached, the furnace power switches on and the cam-programmer starts. At the end of the heating cycle, the power switches off. When the temperature of the charge has dropped to a pre-arranged level, the chamber automatically isolates and the fast cooling switches on. The temperature then falls rapidly until safe preset back to air temperature is reached. Thyristors are used to attain a control accuracy of one or two degrees, and a chart recorder is provided as standard. A working vacuum of 5 × 10_5 torr is used and the pressure is governed to remain always below 5 > 10 - ' torr during the heating cycle.

Wentgate Engineers Limited, UK Circle number 53 on Reader Enquiry Service card Heat-treating furnace Richard D Brew & Co, lnc, New Hampshire, USA, has developed a fast-cooling, heat-treating furnace for brazing and sintering, etc. Model 920 comprises a work space chamber measuring 2 4 ~ . 3 6 / 2 4 inches, with front loading. The furnace features six-sided heating and has a very

fast gas cooling system. The maximum operating temperature is 2 4 0 0 F and this can be achieved from room temperature within 20 minutes. The cool-down rate from 1950:F to 1000 F with loaded furnace is six minutes. Nitrogen is recirculated through an external heat exchanger. Space simulator for the CNES Alcatel (France) have received an order from the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiale (CNES) for the provision of a space simulation chamber for testing of the microjet altitude correctors on artificial satellites. This must permit the investigation of microjets whose power varies from a few MN to ION, in a range of pressures between 1>~!0 , torr and I torr. The system comprises an experimental chamber i.8 in. diameter and 2 m long, in stainless steel evacuated by two primary pumping systems with large Roots pumps (800 ma/hr each), and a secondary pumping system including a 5000 litres/sec diffusion pump. The pumping system is completed by a refrigerated cryopump at 80~K with a capacity of 25000 litres/sec, designed to absorb the condensible vapours issuing from the jets. The development of this equipment posed severe problems in protection

against vibration due to the very low power levels at which measurements must be made. To this end, the experimental chamber is housed in a concrete block weighing 100 tonnes. The fuel employed in the jets similarly necessitated the use of corrosion-resistant materials throughout the chamber and the seals. The simulator will be installed at the CNES station at Toulouse. New Veeco department Veeco Instruments lnc of Plainview, New York, have announced the formation of an Analytical Instruments Department to provide greater versatility and a superior service in vacuum associated devices, mass spectrometers and sophisticated surface physics systems. The new department, under the management of Mr Stanley R Goldfarb, will be responsible for the marketing, technical service and installation of low energy diffraction, reflected high energy electron diffraction, Auger emission, field ion microscopes and photo-electron spectrometers manufactured by Vacuum Generators Ltd of England. The Veeco range of mass spectrometers will be complemented by Vacuum Generators' line of equipment ranging from lowcost residual gas analyzers to complete systems for chemical analysis. Further details are available from Veeco Instruments Inc. Terminal Drive, Plainview, Long Island, New York 11803.

NRC-Ulvac agreement NRC-Europe, a subsidiary of Norton Company, have announced a distribution agreement with UIvac Corporation (formerly Japan Vacuum Engineering Co Ltd) for all of Western Europe with the exception of the UK and Sweden. Ulvac is one of the leading manufacturers of vacuum equipment in Japan. There has been a long-standing connection between UIvac and the Vacuum Equipment Division of Norton Company due to a mutual distribution agreement between UIvac and Norton, Norton being the sole distributor of Ulvac products in the US and Ulvac the sole distributor of Norton Vacuum products in Japan. Further details are obtainable from NRC-Europe, Bridge Road East, Wehvyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, England.

Dounreay materials testing reactor In order to ensure that fresh needs are met as they arise, the U K A E A has recently closed the Dounreay materials testing reactor (DMTR) and transferred the staff on this project to other work at the Dounreay site, mainly to the team which is being set up to commission and operate the new prototype fast reactor. The closure of DMTR is part of a plan announced in May 1968 to reorganise materials testing facilities and so reduce annual operating costs (by £t m). Further information is available from UKAEA, 11 Charles Ii Street, London SWI.
