The Electrogenic S o d i u m P u m p . By G. A. KERKUT& B. YORK. 182 pp. Scienteehniea, Bristol. 1972. £4"50. THIS book, besides giving the background and experimental evidence for the contribution of the sodium pump to the membrane potential, also deals with the more general problem of the development of a theory in science. There had been evidence for a sodium pump in muscle and red blood cells many years before the theory became accepted. This book traces the development of the facts, and the time lag between the knowledge and acceptance of the knowledge by the general scientific community. It suggests that sometimes the more valid theory is rejected because we are quite satisfied with the present incorrect answers.

M i t o c h o n d r i a (Biogenesis and Btoenergetics), B l o m e m b r a n e s (Molecular Arrangem e n t and Transport M e c h a n i s m s ) . Vol. 28 of the FEBS Meeting in Amsterdam, 414 pp. North Holland-American Elsevier. 1972. $240.0. THIS is a volume containing two symposia. The first on mitochondria contains 11 contributions. The second on biomembranes contains 16 contributions. The book is printed by photo offset from the original manuscripts.

E n z y m e s (Structure and Function). Vol. 29 of the FEBS Meeting in Amsterdam, 1972. 241 pp. North Holland-American Elsevier. THIS symposium contains 14 contributions of the properties of enzymes. Topics included are protein structure, role of water, magnetic resonance studies, relaxation methods, role of metal ions, multi enzyme complexes and where do new enzymes come from ?

Techniques o f Lipidology (Isolation, Analysis and Identification o f Lipids).

By MAURICE KATES. 610 pp. North Holland-American Elsevier. 1972. $10.50. THIS is a volume in the series "Laboratory Techniques in Bioehemistry and Molecular Biology". It is a useful paperback, and gives full details for the analysis and separation of lipid mixtures. I n general, very adequate practical details are given so that the experimentalist will know precisely what to do. There is also a useful introductory section giving the definition and classification of the majority of lipids.

Advances in the Biosciences. Vol. 9. International Conference on Prostaglandins. Edited by S. BURGSTROM& S. BERNHARD. 887 pp. Pergamon Press. Vieweg. 1973. £20. THIS is the result of the International Conference on Prostaglandins held in Vienna in September 1972. The majority of active workers on prostaglandins were present at this conference and the resulting symposium gives a very good account of the present state of the subject. The chapter headings are: 1. Biosynthesis. 2. Metabolism. 3. Analytical methods. 4. Discussion on analytical methods. 5. Biological activity and structure. 6. Metabolic effects (1). 7. Prostaglandins and adenyl cyclase system. 8. Metabolic effects (2). 9. Respiratory system. 10. Gastrointestinal system. 11. Renal system. 12. Circulatory system. 13. Inflammation. 14. Nervous system. 15. Termination of pregnancy. Steroidogenesis. Ovarian function. Male reproduction. There is also a summary of a round table discussion on the Regulation of Fertility.

The Prostaglandins, Vol. 1. Edited by PETER W. RAMWELL. 400 pp. Plenum Press. 1973. $29.50. THIS is a textbook, the first of a multi-volume series. The chapter headings are: 1. Introduction. 2. Chemistry. 3. Biosynthesis. 4. Autonomic neurotransmission. 5. Renal homeostasis and the hypertensive state. 6. Skin. 7. Lungs. 8. Ocular effects. 9. Cardiovascular action. 10. Lipid metabolism. 11. The hypothalamus-pituitary-endocrine system. 12. Gonadal function. 13. Clinical use of prostaglandins in reproduction. There are 18 authors contributing to the book.

The BHe Acids. Chemistry, P h y s i o l o g y and Metabolism, Vol. 2. P h y s i o l o g y and M e t a b o l i s m . Edited by P. P. NAIR ~ D. KRITCHEVSKY. 329 pp. Plenum Press. 1973. $19.50.
