The Resampling Project: The aim of the Resampling Project is to spread the word about the revolutionary new statistics. Resampling is the single great breathrough in the last 2 decades, according to Kotz and Johnson's Great Breakthroughs in Statistics. But information about this method has spread only slowly outside the profession. And uses have so far been mostly limited to state-of-the-art difficult problems, rather than the everyday problems for which resampling has the most to offer. We offer you FREE a wide variety of informational materials. All can be downloaded from the internet, or, if you're in N. America, we will send them to you on disk (send us your formatted high density IBM disk). The short reprints are available on paper via regular mail ("snailmail"), if you prefer. We are associated with the software developer Resampling Stats that sells the program of that name to perform resampling operations in an efficient and user-friendly fashion on IBM's and Macs. (Thus we will pass on your name to receive commercial information about Resampling Stats unless you instruct us not to).

Downloading: With a graphical browser (like Netscape) for the World Wide Web: http://www. statistics.com. As you browse, remember to scroll down through pages using the "scroll bar" at the right of the screen. Without a graphical web browser: Most interact users have available the 'Lynx" program to review Web documents in text only mode. If you can reach a system prompt (usually a Unix prompt at which you can type a system command), type lynx http://www.statistics.com/Welcome.html While you are browsing using lynx, you can mail material to yourself by typing "p". If lynx does not work, try www http://www'statistics'c°m/Welc°me'html The above instructions, if they work, will allow you to look at the Resampling '"Web Page", in "text only" mode (without graphics or mouse control).

SPSS brings Stats Product to Windows 95 and Win NT; New release revolutionizes analysis and presentation of data in tables. SPSS ® Inc. had announced that it will ship the new Windows 95 version of its software, SPSS 7.0 for Windows", by the end of the year. TM

Dramatically improved presentation. SPSS 7.0 features all-new presentation capabilities that give users full control over the appearance of tables of statistical results. Now, users can quickly create tables by choosing from a library of presentationready formats called TableLooks Users can further customize their reports and highlight items by modifying color, fonts, line styles and headings. Flexible new pivot tables. With the product's revolutionary pivot tables, users can easily reorganize tables to look at their results from different angles simply by dragging an icon. Pivot tables enhance users' analytical possibilities by giving them the ability to rotate or pivot through multidimensional views of their results. This rotation makes it easy for people to glean additional insight from the original table. Efficient output navigation. SPSS 7.0's new Navigator provides users with a birdseye view of all of the output from their analyses. The Navigator's efficient output management enables users to quickly fred particular results without wading through screens of output. Users can also better

organize the results of numerous analyses for reports and presentations simply by clicking and dragging in the Navigator's outline view.

Enhanced statistical functionality. The statistical enhancements to SPSS 7.0 include a state-of-theart general linear modeling (GLM) procedure for more versatility in specifying analyses. Markus vonder Luehe, SPSS, ~ff Munich, Germany, E-mail: mluehe@ spss.de

Information about commercial statistical and scientific software prices and descriptions of many packages This information can be found in the catalogue Scitech Software for Science; website: http://www. scitechint.com/, phone: + 1.800.622-3345. Unfortunately, most of these packages tend to be moderately expensive when compared with similar packages available in the shareware market. W. Information Society for Epidemiologic Research The Society for Epidemiologic Research (SER) was established in 1968 as a forum for sharing the latest in epidemiologic research To date, the SER is committed to keeping epidemiologists at thevanguard of scientific developments. To this end, the Society sponsors the American Journal of Epidemiology and Epidemiologic Reviews, as well as the John C. Cassel Memorial Lecture, and the annual SER meeting. It also awards the Abraham M. Lilienfeld Student Prize to an outstanding student whose paper is then presented at the annual meeting. SER also organizes an annual student workshop in which doctoral research projects are discussed among twelve graduate students and four faculty members. The annual SER meeting provides a forum for presentations and informal exchange among all SER members. The meetings are hosted by SER members at various institutions across the United

States and Canada. Along with the plenary session lecture, more than 200 papers and 100 posters are presented. Also included in the agenda is a series of roundtable workshops featuring eminent guest faculty leading discussions about current issues in specific epidemiologic subspecialities. In addition, a membership to the SER includes: •

A subscription to the American Journal of Epidemiology (24 issues)

A subscription to Epidemiologic Reviews (presently two issues per year)

Newsletters including abstract forms and instructions for presenting papers at the annual meeting, notification of fellowships, and information on Society activities. The SER Directory of members with names, address, and telephone numbers.

Membership dues: Region Domestic Foreign (includes Canada and Mexico)
