It p l a c e s v a s t g r a i n - p r o d u c i n g r e g i o n s in c h e a p c o m m u n i c a t i o n w i t h Odessa, t h e c h i e f p o i n t of e x p o r t , w h i l e t h e i m m e n s e coal fields of S o u t h e r n R u s s i a will c o m e into easier c o n n e c t i o n with t h e i n d u s t r i a l d i s t r i c t s of P o l a n d . T h e r e a r e reasons, too, to believe t h a t n e w f a c t o r i e s will d e v e l o p along" t h e c a n a l on a c c o u n t of t h e c h e a p n e s s of t h i s n e w m o d e of t r a n s p o r t . It will be s e e n at o n c e t h a t we h a v e h e r e a m a k e a n d b r e a k w h i c h c a n be a c t e d on f r o m a d i s t a n c e , a n d a n o r d i n a r y M o r s e s o u n d e r does t h e rest. B u t m a t t e r s , a f t e r all, a r e n o t q u i t e so s i m p l e . I t is e a s y to d i s p a t c h i n t o s p a c e H e r t z i a n w a v e s at i n t e r v a l s c o r r e s p o n d i n g to d o t s a n d d a s h e s , b u t t h e p o w d e r in t h e receiver, o n c e polarized, r e m a i n s polarized. T o g e t o v e r t h i s obstacle, a t i n y h a m m e r is so a r r a n g e d t h a t , t h e m o m e n t a c u r r e n t p a s s e s t h r o u g h t h e t u b e , t h e h a m m e r t a p s t h e side of t h e t u b e a n d d e p o l a r i z e s t h e p o w d e r r e a d y for t h e ~ e x t signal. T h e r e is n o t h i n g in c o m m o n b e t w e e n e t h e r e a l or w i r e l e s s t e l e g r a p h y a n d t e l e g r a p h y b y i n d u c t i o n ; t h e p h e n o m e n a a r e w h o l l y distinct. T h e H e r t z i a n r a d i a n c e is a k i n to l i g h t , a n d t h e p o l a r i z a t i o n of t h e p o w d e r in t h e r e c e i v e r finds its a n a l o g u e in tile m o l e c u l a r c h a n g e w h i c h is w r o u g h t b y l i g h t in a sensitized plate.
