and B e l g i u m Continuing their policy of developing overseas markets by setting up wholly owned subsidiaries, Schrader Pneumatics have recently announced the formation of new affiliate companies in both Holland and Belgium. Global spending for surface-and-space based meteorological systems and instrumentation is estimated at S1.7-$2.3 billion for 1977-1986. Spending for surface equipment needs is expected to range between $670 million-$1.2 billion for the 10 years, with the space sub-system market put at a more precise $1.1 billion. The United States and Europe will account for most of the budgets. The 321 page study details the activities of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), its operating arm, the World Weather Watch (WWW) and WWW's three programs, the Global Observing System (COS), Global Data Processing System (GDPS) and the Global Telecommunications System (GTS). WMO and the International Council of Scientific Unions are sponsoring a major research effort, the Global Atmospheric Research Programme (CARP). Annual funding of the space segment will fluctuate during 1977-1986, but will average $110- Sl 15 million per year with peak outlays of $130 million forecast for 1978 and 1984. The low year is expected to be 1980, with estimated budgeting of $80 million. A total of 48 meteorological satellites are predicted to be launched by the US and other nations during the period, with the peak year in launchings (9) scheduled for 1978. In the surface-based market, budgeting for Upper Air Stations will be the leading submarket with a low-high estimate of S478.8-$783.1 million expended for ground equipment, sondes and balloons. Appropriations for Basic Instrumentation Synoptic stations, a critical element in the global meteorological observing system, is projected at a range of $63.7-$194.4 million for 1977-1986 through the startup of an estimated 140 new land stations to implement just over 3000 existing land stations. Observations also are made on commercial ships on a voluntary basis with a potential market of $40-$150 million, depending on the number of ships and instrument quality. Lord Chalfont to be president of BIE in M e x i c o It was announced on the 3 April 1978 at a meeting held at Canning House that Rt Hon Lord Chalfont OBE, MC, has accepted an invitation to be President of the British Industrial Exhibition which is to take place in Mexico City next November. Entitled "Tecnologia Industrial Britanica', the Exhibition will be staged at the Palacio De Los Deportes, Mexico City, 8-17 November 1978 and will be Britain's largest overseas promotional venture this year. The Exhibition is sponsored by the British Overseas Trade Board with the support of the Economic ,Affairs Committee of Canning House and is being organized by Industrial and Trade Fairs International Ltd. It will be concerned entirely with industrial technology, equipment and services will be deliberately targeted towards those sectors to which the Mexican Government give priority in their development plans. rate in Europe to rise despite ozone depletion controversy While the US aerosol market has always been 5-6 yr ahead of its West European counterpart, the gap has narrowed considerably during the past few years. According to a new 195 p report by Frost ~ Sullivan, Inc, total European consumption exceeded 2 million units in 1975, compared to 2.2 million in the US and combined consumption in both areas now accounts for a two thirds share of the world's annual requirement. The New Yorkbased market research firm forecasts the West European market consuming over 2.7 million units by 1987, rising from 1.8 million in 1977. The study warns, however, that 'three distinct scenarios reflecting the ozone depletion controversy may influence the validity of the forecast, but are critical to the growth of the industry. The scenarios are : (1) the 20% probability ozone will be taken in stride, except in Scandanavia, (2) a 70% probability there will be no CFC prohibitions and (3) the 10% probability CFC will be phased-out by 1980. If the first is realized, F ~ S forecasts European fillings reaching 2.2 million units by 1987. If the second is implemented, they will then reach 2.1 million in 1982 and 3 million by 1987. The last would reduce fillings to 1.4 million in 1982, and remain unchanged in 1987. 309
