TENDON PROGNOSISWITH ULTRASOUND:Part 1 Paul McClellan DVM
The prognosis of tendon injuries of the race horse is made much easier with the use of ultrasound. This does not mean it is always an easy task. Sometimes a horse will do better than you predict, based on ultrasound images, and sometimes the horse will re-injur the tendon.
Figure 1. (This is a scan of a "high bow" (zone 1) in a Thoroughbred, taken in July, 1989. The horse was scheduled for a superficial check ligament desmotomy.
Figure 2. This scan was taken in December, 1989, after surgery and five months of rest. Two blisters of the tendon had been applied. It looks very good at this point. It was recommended that the horse could resume training.

Figure3. This scan was taken in May, 1990, after the horse re-injured the tendon during training. It shows that the original lesion has recurred. The horse never made it back to the races. It was retired and now is a gelding show horse.
TENDON AND REPRODUCTIVE ULTRASOUND IMAGING The Scanner 480 represents a new flexibility in veterinary ultrasound imaging. With a single small linear probe you can switch the operating frequency between 5.0MHz and 7.5 MHz for optimized tendon and reproductive imaging. The Scanner 480 gives you selectable variable electronic focussing which allows you to optimize the resolution in the area of interest (as when imaging the suspensory or sexing a fetus). The 64 grayshade, dual frequency Scanner 480 includes a backlit full alphabet keyboard, cardiac M-mode, dual image display, automatic date and time clock, built-in equine fetal age tables, multiple image memory and remote. Make your toll free call today to upgrade to the latest diagnostic imaging capability available.
